At the meeting last night -- minutes to be distributed soon by Matt btw -- I brought up an idea to build a second 'bunk' mezzanine in the main room. Where this fits is up for discussion, but the best place is naturally where the roof is highest -- and probably between the space heater and the workshop wall. It was pretty positively received, but it's certainly the kind of thing that needs wider approval.
The idea with it is to create a comfy bean-bag space up high, and get rid of some/all of the sofas in the corner that are rarely used and take up tonnes of space - replacing that area with more useful tables and chairs. It's getting pretty cramped on Thursdays now, so the extra floor space will be handy.
Below the bunk will be up for discussion too, but the general idea is to get a more permanent 'sit-down' work area set up underneath it. Possibly move the electronics benches under there, though I'm kind of happy where they are. The ceiling for this will be a little low, 6ft-ish, in order to give enough room to move up-top. Naturally we have some folk that are 6ft+, but the space would be designed as a sitting-down space, rather than a standing area.
Another positive about this setup is that it creates two areas that we can easily make warm, which is going to be the subject of another email -- it's getting chilly in the space :)
We have half of the materials to do this -- 3 sheets of 18mm ply, screws, etc -- so it wouldn't cost too much to get together - the joist and upright timber for the workshop mezz was pretty cheap. Should cost Ł100-Ł150 extra I expect.

I was one of the people chatting to Mike P about this last night and I
think it's a brilliant idea. Particularly when it comes to making a
comfortable, warm space to work, that the underneath space could become.
It'd be cheap and easy to make it bright and warm, and a good spot for
people who visit the space during weekdays to hang out, but without having
to heat the entire space.
I have to say though, that neither of those links are at all inspiring, I'm
sure we can come up with something way WAY better than that! And our new
mezzanine in the workshop space is already a million times better than the
robotfest weird platform thing :)

I'm very much in favor of getting rid of the 'comfy area' as it currently
is. It takes up 1/6 of the main space - and is generally wasted as it
currently is.
Personally, I think the space underneath something like this would be great
for some built-in computer desks, with some nice built-in storage

My vote would certainly be for a staircase. For one thing, if it's going to be the only comfy area, I'd want to be able to carry food up there, so it needs hands free access.
I'm sorry I missed the meeting last night, I wanted to be there, but I was double booked.

Hi, Could we make a Circular lift? Such as the one seen in Star Trek and shopping centres. It will need to be a custom build/design to scale and space available. It could help get things up there. even if we built a dumb waiter.

Well if we get a big enough reprap we can scan ourselves downstairs and print out a copy of ourselves in the bunk area. Opens up all sorts of ethics issues though.

Moving the current soldering stations and putting them flat against a wall would lose the current storage area we have between the members boxes and the "backs" of the shelving. Other than the poor lighting back there, I think it's actually quite a good layout and would like to keep it; there's minimal amount of floor space used for quite a lot of extra storage.
Just my quick two cents... I suffer from acrophobia and not sure if anybody
else does, but if the comfy area is lifted off the ground then it's not
something I would ever use again. Great idea about creating extra space,
but maybe keep some type of area on the ground (even if it's just plastic
chairs with cushions at a table)

Sorry to hear that Justin, I'm pretty sure there'll always be plenty of
tables and chairs at ground level though, unless you wanted something more
loungey?

I'm not 100% convinced by the "corridor of doom" at the back of the space -
it seems to attract lots of junk that doesn't have anywhere else to live!
:) But I don't think the making of a bunk area would necessarily affect the
corridor of doom. We could still keep that as it is with or without the
solder stations, and I don't think it's definite that the solder stations
would even move at this stage, is it?
