I saw Ian Brunswick from the Science Gallery last week and he said that the prep for the Dublin Minimakerfaire that we advised him on is going well, he also said:
"It would be fantastic if you could share the Dublin Mini Maker Faire open call (which is open until March 15th) with your Maker Faire Brighton crew! http://www.makerfairedublin.com/call-for-makers/ It would be fantastic to have some of the brilliant Brighton Makers over - and we might even be able to find funds to do so from for example the British Council. Until next time, Ian"

I'd go, but I've never finished a project, except my USB HID teensy login device. It would make better sense people who have got things to show, to attend in my eyes... :)

You don't have to have made anything complete - we'd just need bodies to help man the stalls/tables, maybe have some kits to sell, that sort of thing. Flights are selling quickly (Gatwick to Dublin return). When I checked the other day, they were 22/return. The cheapest I can find on SkyScanner now are 82/return - I guess RyanAir has latched onto the MakerFaire already!

It's £70 with Air France, but I agree with Mike - perhaps the Ferry would be better? I can fit 4 plus myself in my SUV if it's not too many people, and more than happy to drive. :)

5 in my car works out at around £30 15 in the hire car works out at around £25
that's per person splitting the cost, then add hotel on top. Sounds good to me, just need to know numbers and then decide which option to take. :)

Cool :)
If there's more, I got a quote recently for a 15-seater minibus from Choice that was £220 for Friday - Monday.
Vehicle pass for the ferry is about £165 including driver.

Don't forget to allow for (pricey) petrol! My van's a diesel drinker and costs me about 80 to drive from coast-to-coast (I sometimes go from Brighton to Holyhead to pick my sister up when she's travelling over from Dublin). Add in ferry costs, the usual pit-stops for coffee etc, toll on the M6 - you really don't want to drive the "old M6" through Birmingham, it's a nightmare - and allow for a six-hour drive time (maybe five if you're in a car) and it probably won't work out much cheaper - and a lot more hassle!
If I had a choice, I'd certainly consider flying. Leave Gatwick 9am, arrive 11am, fly back 9pm. Maybe just a few of us would need to be there the night before with everyone else turning up on the day? It may yet turn out to be too expensive for us to go as a group - but it'd be nice to support the MakerFaire, after all we had people showing from Aberdeen; now that's quite a trek!
There are a few hotels on eurocheapo.com but they're also selling out fast (much fewer since I looked a few days ago). Maybe there are a few b&bs in the city that would take a block-booking?

I don't mind covering petrol in my own car, but if it was a shared vehicle, then you make a good point Chris.
Personally, for me, due to where I live, flying is more hassle then driving, as to get to the airport I have to drive, and their long term parking isn't exactly cheap...
That's just my personal reasons though, if people choose to fly, then I may still consider going depending on the overall cost.

I'm banking on having my transit van full of BB stuff to take over so you guys can concentrate on just getting people over there! There'll be room for one in my cab - two at a push. My mum lives next to a chapel on the A55 (in North Wales) about an hour's drive from Holyhead - I'll see if she can put us up there on the night of the 14th so we can come back on an evening ferry and get a few hours kip before the long drive back down.

Just a thought - but if we're not planning on having a stand and just going over for the craic (as the locals would say) I could take down the bulkhead in my van, throw a few settees in the back and we could probably take up to 7-8 people without having to hire another van!

Just a thought: Charter a coach, go via M4 and Fishguard-Rosslare ferry, collecting hackers from Reading, Bristol, Cardiff and anyone else who could get to one of those towns. Perhaps a crazy thought.

Could do, I don't mind contacting Reading and gauging interest?
Could be major hassle though and we'd all have to agree when to go over and come back. Chartered coaches are well expensive too so would probably still have to be able to fit in a minibus to make it more cost effective than each of the hackspaces just sorting out their own transport.

I'm waiting to hear back from my brother-in-law who runs a courier company from somewhere near Ireland (now I wish I took a bit more interest in what my sister tells me about!). He may know of cheaper/freight services. If we're just going along for the day, we might be able to get an early morning ferry over and an evening one back - and bunk down in a chapel vestry the night before and the night of the MakerFaire...

The best hotel is the Trinity Capital - it's in the same street as the science gallery and outdoor space and it nice and has cool decor, I always stay there when I'm doing things at the gallery. The ferrry price seems very cheap - are you sure that's return? I usually pay around £300 and don't forget petrol (a couple of hundred pounds nearly, there and back). But Ian did say that they might be able to get funding for you, so I suggest you apply and then worry about the cost.
