The one I've been using (which Chris and a few others introduced me to a
couple years ago) is :  http://octopart.com/

Octopart looks like a database of components and distributors?

ECDB is for logging stuff you already own, keeping track of projects and
storing shopping lists :)

I keep it all in memory... it's a really bad system... but I do tend
to have most stuff in the world.

I will have to give ecdb a try. Can you share lists of components with
other people?

The best electronics database I've found is at uk.farnell.com ;-)

Farnell actually sucks. It's just really easy to use. Mouser is soo much
better, they have pretty much every variation of everything in the world,
often at the cheapest prices... it's just a bit less usable, with poor
linking in to datasheets and what not.

@ Matt - at first glance it looked like you could publicly share lists, but
the big 'Public components' button is actually an in-development feature
where you can enter components you own into a public pool, basically
opening them up to buying offers from other users. But it doesn't work
yet...

having components around, just in case you need them, is an expensive game.
If it ever gets out of development, having a shop shop style feature would
be awesome as i rarely just one or two of anything.

There isn't really anything stopping us setting up our own database of
components if there? If we have something, we add it to the online db, and
if we use it in a project, we link to the BB page for that part and add
nice code examples and what not.

Now that would be a brill idea, as there's been a number of times when I
want to try out and idea and am generally bugging people if they have one I
could buy off of them before having to order a batch of them online
(batches are always cheaper).

There's a swap shop on the Wiki:

Could build something out of this?
