Promoting Your Apps

So, I have a few (ad supported) free apps in the app store now.  My best one (Indie Rock News) is getting 50 downloads a day and my second (WebcomiX) is about 10 to 15.  All this is purely people browsing the app store or searching for a particular topic.  Now while I think that is quite amazing, I'd really like to add a 0 to the end of those figures but am not sure how?  When i do a release I email all the major iOS sites/blogs but no one has mentioned it yet.  I occasionally get mails from publicists offering their services but that seems a lot of money for free apps.  I even spent £10 on google ads but despite the thousands of clicks i supposedly got, i never really noticed any bump in downloads.

Has anyone got any suggestions for getting their apps "out there"?

With google ads, you have to work quite hard to prevent google from running your ads on the wrong devices - its a bit of a scam IMHO - did you jump through all the hoops (making filters, proactively blocking irrelevant sites / devices, etc?)

Can't say i did.  I just stuck £10 in the account and created a simple add for one of the apps.  I did disable some of the keywords based on the hit rate and i did ignore some of their suggestions as they were too broad.

I wonder how much you have to pay/who you have to sleep with to get an app reviewed on a decent iOS/Mac site?

IMHO these days you won't get any success with a generic "promote the
app" strategy. That stopped being effective for most apps a year ago
(a couple of years ago?), as shown by the rarely profitable "pay to be
in the top 10 on app store".

(IMHO there are plenty of good reasons to pay for app-store ranking;
but "increasing your profit" isn't one of them)

Instead, you need to do what everyone else does: invent a marketing
campaign around your audience, their demographic, the things that
interest them, the sites they visit, etc. Targetting advertising is
*everything*.

On apps specifically I'm not yer man but marketing is something I do a lot of. A scatter gun affect can only have a limited amount of impact. You can certainly ramp up awareness using social media; which bits and how depends on the age profile of the audience. It's worth building a 21 day plan and targeting really hard during that time, responding on forums etc. Setting aside a couple of hours every day. I've also had some success targeting relevant journalists, bloggers and reviewers through their Twitter profiles, engaing with them personally and then getting them to review something.
Getting people you know to write user reviews also helps. Radio can also help.
