How to Install Bridge Works for the first time

Bridge Works New Installation Setup.

NOTE:

  1. This installation should only be performed by qualified computer support personnel!

     2.  Workstation Administrative privileges are required.

     3.  If a version of Bridge Works is already installed on the workstation, check the version number.  For versions

         prior to v8.1.0.26 see How to upgrade from Click once to MSI installation to completely remove the Click Once

         components before installing the new Bridge Works Application Shell.

     4.  For versions v8.1.0.26 through v8.1.1.7 see the document How to upgrade to Bridge Works to v8.2.0.27.

     5.  There are two known bugs in v8.2.0.27.

    1. The Group account defaults to WSDOT in the log-in window.  Be sure to select your Account Group every time you login or you will get an error message.
    2. The Notes text box in the Report Types will unexpectedly highlight all text you have entered.  Once the text is highlighted the next character you enter will delete all of the highlighted text.  If you very deliberately enter text you can stop typing when the highlighting happens.  Then click at the end of your entry and continue entering text.

The following components must be installed before installing Bridge Works dotNET;

·Microsoft Data Access Components 2.8

      MDAC 2.8 is already bundled with XP Pro SP 2 and Vista OS.

·dotNET Framework 2.0

      Vista users will need to install dotNET Framework 3.5 which has dotNET 2 included.

·Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Report Viewer

      http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=8a166cac-758d-45c8-b637-dd7726e61367&displaylang=en

·Internet Information Services (IIS)

This can be installed using the Add or Remove Programs, Add/Remove Windows Components command button.

      SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP2

Here is a link to SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP2.  This needs to be the last component installed;

https://business.wsdot.wa.gov/Bridge/Preservation/Management/Apps/SQLEX2005SP2.EXE

All of these components can be located at;

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads

After the above components have been installed the Bridge Works Application Shell installation may be started.

Click on this address or open a Microsoft Internet Explorer window and enter this address;

https://business.wsdot.wa.gov/Bridge/Preservation/Management/Apps/BridgeWorksSetup_08_02_00_full.msi

Save the file to your desktop or any local folder.  Vista users will need to review Help for Vista OS platforms

This MSI includes the BridgeWorks_BWSystem file which is a complete database backup.  Therefore the download will take some time.  Please be patient.

Install the .msi file as you normally would install an application;

A.    By using the Start/Run command button

B.     Double clicking the .msi file

C.     Run command for GPO

After the installation is complete launch the Bridge Works application.

When the application opens to the Splash Screen the installation of the BridgeInventory database (BridgeWorks_BWSystem file) will automatically start.  After the BridgeInventory database has completed installing, the log-in window will open.

Log into the application and allow the Bridge Works Service service start the synchronization with the WSDOT server.  It is advisable to allow the service to completely synchronize with the server before turning off the workstation or disconnecting from the internet.

Note:   New users will need a Bridge Works account before they can continue.     Please contact Grant Griffin to set up an account.

Those who will not be applying for a Bridge Works user’s account, such as IT personnel, may use the Guest account.  This will launch the application in a “Read Only” mode that will allow the service to make a connection and synchronize with the WSDOT server.

To use the Guest account enter the following information in the log-in window.

            Group:             WSDOT

            User Name:    Guest

            Password:       password

After the application has opened check the lightening bolt in the lower right corner of the user interface window.  The lightening bolt will turn yellow when there is a connection with the WSDOT server.  As the Bridge Works Service communicates with the WSDOT server the number next to the lightening bolt will increase and then decrease to nothing when synchronization is complete.

It is advisable to allow the service to fully synchronize with the WSDOT server before shutting down the workstation or disconnecting from the Internet.

Here is a list of milestones you will need to know during the installation process:

    • When the application log-in page opens, note that the lightning bolt at the upper right of the login screen may be gray indicating that there is no connection to the server.  The lightning bolt may turn yellow indicating a connection immediately or it may take some time.

    • Wait approximately 10 minutes, restart your computer, and restart Bridge Works .Net from the Start button.

    • You will notice that a WSDOT Bridge Preservation Office folder has been added to your programs list.  You can send a shortcut icon of the Bridge Works Application Shell to your desk top if you like.

    • The login screen will open again and the lightning bolt may still be gray.  Wait for the lightning bolt to turn yellow indicating that you have connected to the server.  Please be patient, this process may take some time depending on server traffic and your internet connection.

    • Once the lightning bolt is yellow login using your Bridge Works .Net Group Account, User Name and Password.

    • If you have not set a password leave the password field blank.  If you have forgotten your password, contact Grant Griffin.

    • Let the application run for a few hours to fully complete the initial synchronization.

    • Once the initial synchronization is complete, please be sure to promptly set an Inventory List from the Master Inventory List.

Has anything been done to address running the program after
installation without Admin Rights?
