I constantly think of monotony of brainworkshop the game.

I mean I know this routine is good for my brain health. But it is hard
to eat good things like broccoli and carrot. It is hard to push
yourself to play brainworkshop everyday.

So the ultimate goal of brainworkshop evolution gotta be evolution in
unpredictability (instead of current monotony), varying intensity and
game drama.

I always had this feeling about brainworkshop. However it became real
clear after reading presentation

by Michael Booth, valve ai programmer, one of the Left4Dead
developers. Among other things like A* path finding algorithm and
zombie generation we talks about player experience. Let me cite (p78):

>> What do we mean by “dramatic game pacing”?
•Algorithmically adjusting game pacing on the fly to maximize
“drama” (player excitement/intensity)
>> Inspired by Observations from Counter-Strike
•Natural pacing of CS is "spiky”, with periods of quiet
tension punctuated by unpredictable moments of intense combat
•Constant, unchanging combat is fatiguing
•Long periods of inactivity are boring
•Unpredictable peaks and valleys of intensity create a
powerfully compelling and replayable experience
•Same scenario, often the same map, yet different and
compelling experience each round

And next slide:

>> Algorithm:
•Estimate the “emotional intensity” of each Survivor
•Track the max intensity of all 4 Survivors
•If intensity is too high, remove major threats for awhile
•Otherwise, create an interesting population of threats

He explains these terms in subsequent slides.

Counter Strike has been on the scene for surprisingly many years
because of its drama and unpredictability. So how can we intrigue our
internal monkey to play healthy game? How can we make brainworkshop
attractive and replayable?

One thing I've enjoyed when playing PASAT Speed Run over on
CognitiveFun.net is that the difficulty (speed) is constantly being
increased until you miss, essentially making it incredibly difficult
to score 100% even at very low levels.

There is to my knowledge no research into what one might expect from
DNB speed training, although we've had the discussion on here a few
times now and I've very much enjoyed experimenting with different
speeds.
