Hello Boxsters,
A belated Happy father's Day to all the dads that belong to the Den.
it is also the 2nd day of Summer, 2026, and a Monday!
Thanks to the scanning prowess and generosity of Dave O. we now have a new first release boxart in the Den.
This week's FD is the 1969 art from Richard Locher that Monogram featured on their new 1/48 scale kit of the Bell P-39 Airacobra.
It was quite a hit when it came out since the first plastic kit of this plane was the 1955 Revell, 1/46 scale kit.
The P-39 first flew in 1938 and almost 9,600 of them were built in numerous variations.
The original plane had a multi-stage supercharger that gave it good performance at higher altitudes.
The US bought the cheaper version with the single-stage supercharger and that confined it to lower altitudes.
The Soviets got almost half of them on lend-lease and liked the Airacobra's low altitude performance and firepower.
The P-39 was used by many nations throughout WWII and after the war a few were modified for air racing.
I scouted out a baker's dozen Airacobra photos for your enjoyment.
All the images are 1280 pixels.

Jean,

This is a new kit to me... with very evocative boxart for a superbly-designed fighter plane -- it got stuck with a bad rep for poor high-altitudes performance but that was only because the US Army (and later the Air Force) cheaped out and wouldn't pay for the high-performance multi-stage supercharger.
