Hey all

I started a wiki article to help get this project done.

I was thinking we could use google sketchup and share a 3d model to work out the physical design.

Cool! If we need some random plastic pieces (mounting the actuator to
the door, for example), I can 3D print something up.

We messed about with this some on Saturday;  I wrote up a report of that and some thoughts I had afterwords, but ran out of steam before I integrated them into your exisitng wiki structure, so I punted by adding a "Log" section at the end and dumping my content there...

In any case, if anyone interested in this is at the meeting tommorow, I'll be eager to discuss...  I'll be the one measuring  the door jamb with the calipers...

Thanks for attaching the log, I found some stuff about the electronic strike plate approach but wasn't sure if we could mess with the hardware on the door. Unfortunately, I will most likely not be able to make it to the meeting but definitely post any measurements / discussion that happens tomorrow night to the wiki.

Holy mother of god, our prayers have been answered. Meet the Lockitron. I say we get one of these. I know it's not in the hacker tradition of making it ourselves, but damn that's slick. And we only have 31 days left to preorder one at $150. I'd so be down to pitch on one of these for the space. Anyone else?

You're right, it's not very hackerspace(ish) but it gets a job done that none of us seem to be able to complete...I'm in for $10 :)

Might have to get one for the house too....this has enough Wife appeal to make it allowable...

Then why not just get biometric?  Rather than being a crew of self-responsible DIYers who can lock up after themselves and be trusted, we'd have centralized management for access to the space.

I'm confused. This is not about the inability to lock up after ourselves OR trust, this is about key management. There's also a huge cool factor involved. As far as biometric? Find me a solution that is as simple to install as this is. All previous attempts at the RFID door have failed on the fact that there's no simple way to manipulate the locking mechanism. This solves that. The cool thing about this is if we decide to move it will likely work at the new space...Of course we could just steal the mount idea and cut something up on the mill.....

1) Need a smart phone to use it and 2) doesn't ship until March are the only drawbacks. But if this is the route we decide to go, I'll pitch in $10.

I like it, but it won't fit our door.  The deadbolt handle on a residential door is significantly  further from the edge of the door than on the aluminum-framed glass doors at our space and our old space (and so I assume any future space).

The FAQ at the bottom of this page: https://lockitron.com/preorder  says it's compatible with most through-hole/cylindrical deadbolts, but not with a mortise lock (which we have).

If the majority of you say that's what we need then I'd get on board.  Since I haven't been around in a while I don't know what problem this solves.  I'm about 99% certain that gadget is gonna present more problems for peeps than it solves -- and just transfer the old ones to new paradigms.  There's a battery, phone, the internet, not to mention the management system; and that beats a lock and combo box?

hahaha. I didn't see any of these emails til I got home. One of you guys should have mentioned this tonight while we were fiddling around with the door all that time.

I'm game for this if everyone else wants it. They claim it's hackable (arduino + BT4 + WiFi) so perhaps we can add our own unique spin to it.

I'm also definitely down to help Rob & Lee & Jim if they want to build our own version of the mechanics for this thing.
