In case you are not also on the BCPT email list, I wanted to make sure you all know that the 2nd annual tournament is a week from today at Harvard. All the logistics are the same as last year, and once again we are delighted to welcome Will Shortz as our special guest. This year, one of the tournament puzzles is especially constructed for the occasion by Joon Pahk (a BCPT organizer) and Brenden Emmett Quigley. Many Boston Cru are serving as volunteer judges and scorers.
And PLEASE help spread the word: tell your local crossword friends, post the website link on your Facebook page, or become a Fan at http://www.facebook.com/BostonCrosswordTournament. There are plenty of competitor seats left, and it's a lot of fun for solvers at all levels.
Finally I can't believe an entire year or more has gone by without my organizing any Boston Cru social events! I'll try to do better this year, since we always have fun when we get together. I'd welcome the help of a co-organizer if anyone has an idea for an event and wants to help plan and carry it out.
Eric Theoretical Organizer, Cruciverbalists of Boston
Hi, My husband and I think we want to compete as a pair but I did not realize that only one ticket was required. Therefore I have an extra ticket so if you can use it let me know.

My boyfriend and I already have a ticket, but does anyone know how the pairs competition is run? Is it two crosswords done separately and then the scores are added, or do you actually work together? Also, for those who have done this before, which day of the week in the NYT puzzles would you say the competition puzzles are comparable to?

Pair solvers work together on one puzzle, whispering between yourselves as needed. We ask pair solvers to sit near the back of the hall. It sounds strange, but it works well for the relatively relaxed character of this event.
I believe the puzzles are a Monday-Thursday spread, although I am not completely sure about the mix of days. But Thursday level will be the hardest (Joon, chime in if you have more updated info).

Jack and I love the pair solving -- that's how we do every puzzle at home. We've been to the national tournament (ACPT) a few times, but find the solitary solving less fun. The event at Harvard is fabulous!
