Hopper and Hack Reduce are hosting a hackathon this Saturday. While there will be number of JVM based technologies, the last time this ran, a team use Mandy (https://github.com/forward/mandy)  to figure how oil prices affected flight prices and which stocks were the most volatile in the NYSE. A number of different datasets will be available and ready for anyone to use, https://github.com/hackreduce/Hackathon/wiki/Datasets.
