Greetings,

I'm new to the group and love Ruby and Rails. However, while joining the group for my own personal reasons, I'm also here to announce a contract gig at Boston University.

We have a Rails application that needs to be completed (in a very particular sense) by September, with additional work to be done until October (when it should be launched 1.0-style). Everything's ready to roll; it's even already been started. We know it's short notice, but we're hoping that we can find someone by the end of next week (and the sooner the better). If all goes well---as the hope is that this application will be part of an ongoing, continuously funded multi-year project---this short contract job could easily turn into something much more long-term.

The job/application/project description that was composed for posting is below (basically, we want an experienced Rails developer who's current with 2012 web standards, technologies, and best practices). Please feel free to ask me questions about the job/application/project.

Sincerely,

Austin

Contract job: Web application developer at Boston University

We seek a web application developer who will work with us to create a
robust, interactive, easy-to-use website and application for the study
of archaeological ceramics. The particular data set to be used in this
initial version comprises pottery produced in the Levant from antiquity
through modern times. The website will function as an archive and the
web application as a tool that will allow the user to filter, search, and
organize detailed data about the ceramics in various ways, for example
by region (e.g., the central Levant from Beirut to Haifa), time period
(e.g., under the Roman empire), or function (e.g., fine tableware or
transport jars). The application is intended to spur investigation of a
wide array of topics such as the identification of manufacturing centers
or the distribution of products and so the movement of people along
with their tastes and ideas. It will build on some pieces already
implemented in Rails.

The developer must have solid design skills (especially for the UI), a
sympathetic attitude towards the academic data set and its users,
a sensitivity to crafting a user experience that is both sensible and
dynamic, and a willingness to work closely with the end users to
create an effective site.

Necessary skills: Ruby, Rails, HTML5, CSS3, MySQL), Javascript and
Javascript libraries (for example jQuery), ability to incorporate Ajax
functionality and work with Google APIs, particularly Google Maps.
Familiarity with deployment on Linux systems helpful.

The project is ready to begin immediately.
