I consider the areas around thoughtbot and even more so around
Brightcove to be very safe.

However, for at least the project nights, perhaps the organizers could
include a "we'll walk as a group to the Boston Common Garage at 9pm"
service as part of the event? Provides a hard stop to the event and a
reliable, safe way to return to your car.

I'll help organize an escort party to the Boston Common Garage next time
& will do it myself if necessary.

We'll need to update the project night webpage to advertise this
security escort service and give parking guidance.

In general, I'd say it's pretty safe around there, too. Specially by
Park Street, simply because there are so many people on the streets at
all hours.

However, somewhat-relatedly, when I came back downstairs after last
week's project night, my bicycle, which had been chained to a lamppost
nearly directly in front of the thoughtbot building, was gone.
It looked like it might be trash night (there were a bunch of boxes
leaned up against the lamppost where my bike had been), so I wondered
if local building management or stores would have removed my bike
because it was in the way.

One ironic item: when I was looking around the area to see if someone
had just dumped it somewhere, I encountered another bike that was just
sitting unlocked, and unmolested, (though admittedly in a side alley,
not the main thoroughfare)

Anyone had any trouble like this before in the area? There were two
bikes locked up to a sign up the street, that were still there. So
I'm sincerely hoping it wasn't outright theft, but merely
removal-because-in-the-way. But I'm not sure where to start asking.

Any clues or directions to pursue are welcome.
Thanks
Philipp

In bike parking related issues: the Thoughtbot guys have been kind enough to me before to let me bring my bike upstairs. I'm nervous about Downtown Crossing & I had brought an expensive bike, so I was very grateful to them for that.

Another time when I brought a cheaper bike I parked it outside Brightcove with two locks attaching it to a street sign--- a Kryptonite and a cable for the front wheel. Strangely enough, someone cut the cable lock but left both the wheel (which was at that point unsecured) and the Kryptonite alone. I've never asked whether Brightcove will let me bring my bike upstairs, but I'd be curious, since I've never had a lock cut before (in daylight on a busy street!)

I should have mentioned in my last email that people are more than welcome to bring their bike upstairs. We can add this to the website next time around.

At Brightcove, you can park your bike in the garage.

FYI -- If you're riding around the city, just about every parking garage has space for bikes.
