Does anyone know of a free (or just inexpensive) HTML Help
program with which I can compile my html pages and make
CHM? I haven't any advanced needs, just the simple compilation
of the existing HTML pages.
I downloaded and tried HTML Help Workshop from the
Microsoft site and I'm completely disappointed with it.
* TreeView pane that cannot be resized, with repaint bug when
more than X (maybe 20) items added.
* I never know what I have (or not) saved and i'm clicking any
save icon I see
* Some commands are only on toolbar and vice versa.
* treeview managing is complicated to perfection. Moving nodes by
dragging is "not implemented yet", etc
* Sudden death (Illegal operation) with lost of all entered data.
* and much more, ...
Finally, I succeded to make a CHM with it but that was real nightmare.

I don't if this will help you, but try out Accviz HelpMaker.

You may want to try FAR (http://www.helpware.net/FAR/index.html), a
shareware program that overcomes most of HTML Help Workshop's bugs and
limitations. The download available from the Web site is a full working
version, and it's free to use for eight weeks. (The cost of a single user
license is $49.)
