Hi! I recently recieved a 'bonsai' plant as a presant from my nan. It
is completely untrained, quite small and has very little foliage. I
don't know what to do. I really want to  train my plant but i can't
find anything to help me and inform me on what to do and what not to
do. please help.

Hi, welcome to bonsai help. members will be able to help you much
better if they know what type of bonsai it is, and if you can a
picture and/or discription would be great, you can do this by putting
the picture on a photo website like photobucket.com and giving us the
address, or with the use of the files button you see on your right.

Also, once youve done that, why not tell us what you would like it to
look like.
you can find some basic advice just with the use of a search engine,
and there are some great books avaliable aswell.

Hi Jodie,

What you have is a trident maple seedling.  These make very good
bonsai "eventually"
but first you need to give it some bulk by planting it in the ground
to let it grow
for a a few years.  It is a common misconception  that a bonsai tree
is a baby tree.
Luckily tridents grow very quickly in open ground.  I suggest you get
hold of a bonsai
book from the library ( bonsai by Peter Chan is good one on this
subject).
