Hello all,
I want to set up a new website with multilingual content (I am not
talking of the back end but really of the content). Everey page should
be available in several languages. If a particular translation does
not yet exist, the front end should display a previously defined
default language. I would like to first finish the pages in the
default language and then, one by one, translate the content without
having to worry about the layout.
What kind of support for multilanguage content does BoltWire offer?
Cheers, Andreas

BoltWire has quite good support for UTF8 so you should be able to post
in any languages. And there is more than one way to accomplish what
you are thinking without too much trouble. And with translation files
(several are available) it's easy to make links and messages etc all
language specific.

How are you planning to control which language is displayed? I would
suggest possibly a member data field which allows them to select their
preference. Or you could use a dynamic dropdown menu showing whatever
languages are available.

Then for each you could have subpages like main.topic1.en,
main.topic1.es, main.topic1.fr, etc.

On main.topic1 you simply put a conditional (or a custom function)
which includes the appropriate content. You could also tweak the
action list so it edits the subpage displayed rather than the main
page. Lot's of ways to do it, I'm just thinking out loud.

Cheers,
Dan

Hi Dan,

first of all I should explain that I (at least in the beginning) will
be the only editor an content creator of the new site. The consumer of
the information should be able to choose between the offered languages
through a menu (breadcrumb style or drop down box) so that he will see
the corresponding version of the page.

Now, what I would like to have for me as the editor is a convenient
way to translate the pages one by one from the default language to any
of the other languages I want to offer. For example consider the Typo3
CMS which I know a little bit. There you can have a list view
indicating which translations of which pages are missing. I mean ok,
this is really very advanced and maybe a bit oversized for a wiki
solution. For my needs it would suffice to visit page after page,
identify easily which translations are missing and perform the missing
translations _without_ having to worry about the structure of the page
and its language-specific url.

BoltWire is designed to be setup any way you want. It is flexible and
powerful--but it is not pre-built. If you can find a solution that
does what you want already you might wish to use it. If you want to be
able to build about anything, it might be worth the effort to learn
BoltWire.

BoltWire has powerful search & reporting capabilities so you could
certainly generate a list of all your pages and which languages exist
or not. But again, you will have to set that up yourself. It's not
hard, you just have to learn the BoltWire syntax.

Cheers,
Dan

Ok, thanks so far for your help and comments. I think I will just
delve in and start to set up the site in its default language. Then I
hopefully will have a deeper understanding of the inner workings and
will eventually be able to figure it out myself. I must say, after
having set up boltwire, I am pretty impressed from its speed.

Andreas, you can mark your translated pages via
- url, e.g. "pagename.de" and "pagename.en"
- data variable, e.g. on page you write a data variable like
"language: de"

Create a search for all pages and use a template to check if all pages
are translated.

Greetings, Martin
