Henrik has asked for help finding specimens – if anyone can help I’m sure he would be very grateful. (Apologies to those that also received this request via the myriapod discussion group).

Subject: [myriapod] julids in copula needed, please [1 Attachment]
[Attachment(s) from Henrik Enghoff included below]
Dear myriapodologist colleagues,
Over the years I have looked at gonopods of several julid genera in the scanning electron microscope. Now and then I have incidentally found well-preserved spermatozoa, and these have remarkable surface structures. See, for example, the attached image of Dolichoiulus tongiorgii, scanned from my 1992 revision of this genus (Entomologica scandinavica Supplement 40: 1-158). Here and now SEM images of spermatozoa from five genera are available: Dolichoiulus, Pachyiulus, Nepalmatoiulus, Megaphyllum and Ommatoiulus. There are some apparently significant differences between the genera, and I would like to obtain sperm SEMs from many more genera. The best chance of obtaining spermatozoa would seem to obtain couples of julids preserved during or just after mating. Sometimes, spermatozoa can also be found in the vulvae, so both sexes should be preserved. The spermatozoa seem to survive well in 70% alcohol, some of the specimens which have yielded fine images were collected >25 years ago.
Therefore: if you have julids collected in copula which you are willing to part with, I would be very grateful. I am interested in all julid genera (Ommatoiulus is not so urgent, however, since Nesrine Akkari has already found spermatozoa in several species, and they all seem to be similar). You might also think of looking for mating julids when going to the field. I am looking very much, but so far with no luck. Bringing millipedes in and keeping them in terraria also hasn’t helped, so far, but maybe somebody else can make the julids feel more comfortable than I can.
I would also be thankful for ‘outgroup’ couples of such families as Parajulidae, Mongoliulidae Paectophyllidae, Blaniulidae, Nemasomatidae, Trichoblaniulidae….
Kind regards,
Henrik
