Abstract:

Sonia Sosa, a clinical research engineer at Rice360 Institute for Global Health

Technologies, leads research, testing and presentation of clinical studies for novel

medical devices suitable for use in low-resource settings at Rice University and

hospitals in Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria and Tanzania. Prior to her current role, Sonia held

a primary role on a team developing a low-cost warming crib and a continuous

temperature monitor as a Global Health Fellow with Rice360. Her experience

focuses on designing effective, affordable, rugged, and easy to use devices for use

in low-resource settings. Sonia’s passion for global health began after traveling to

Kenya for a research project to collect user feedback on wheelchairs designed for

underserved populations. She received training in Rwanda on biomedical equipment

repair while volunteering with Engineering World Health at Kibuye District Hospital.

She graduated in 2017 with a BS in Engineering with a Biomedical concentration

from LeTourneau University.

The Rapid Equipping Force (REF) harnesses current and emerging technologies to provide immediate solutions to the urgent challenges of U.S.Army forces deployed globally.

Topic: Originally, the REF established a fixed laboratory workshop capability in 2004 to provide rapid engineering solutions to the growing number of capability gaps presented by Soldiers. The engineers spent a lot of time travelling to talk to Soldiers. This resulted in lost time engineering the required fixes for Soldier requirements. The REF recognized the issue and took bold and innovative steps to solve it.

In order to provide an engineering capability at remote bases, in 2012 the REF deployed two Expeditionary Labs and sent them directly to the tactical edge. This revolutionary solution gave Soldiers immediate access to expert scientists and engineers, allowing them to discuss their operational problems and have the Ex Lab staff quickly fabricate custom-made solutions on site. The Ex Lab is an easily-deployable, custom manufacturing shop equipped with state of the art equipment such as 3D printers, Computer Numerical Control Machines, and fabrication tools. In the past two years, the Ex Labs have provided custom engineering for hundreds of projects provided directly by Soldiers.

This presentation will provide a brief overview of my experience of being part of such an Ex Lab.

Bio Dr. Michael A.K. Liebschner is a Senior Associate in Exponent’s Biomedical Engineering practice. He specializes in experimental and computational mechanics, with special emphasis on the biomechanics of tissue/implant interaction. His background is in mechanical engineering with an additional associate’s degree in electronics and precision engineering.

In addition to his work at Exponent, Dr. Liebschner is a Principal Investigator and Research Professor at Baylor College of Medicine and the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center. His research includes the effect of vibration exposure on injury risk, the role of standard care after motor vehicle accidents on secondary risk of spinal cord injury, and novel manufacturing techniques for artificial bone replacement material.

“ Rice 360: Institute for

Global Health ”

Rice 360: Institute for Global Health Technologies

Example of one of the many projects: Over half of all infants are born with neonatal jaundice, and the majority of these infants in developing nations have no access to expensive phototherapy treatment.

Topic: Rice 360: Institute for Global Health aims to develop and disseminate simple, affordable, and effective health technologies to improve care in low-resource settings around the world. Rice 360's product development process includes: 1) field-based clinical needs evaluation; 2) development of an initial prototype addressing the defined clinical need; 3) laboratory testing and user feedback validating and refining the design; 4) pilot implementation evaluating efficacy and usability; 5) beta prototype generation based on user feedback, clinical results, and manufacturability. Sustainable implementation is sought through licensing to manufacturers who can commercialize the device and market directly to governments, NGOs, and hospitals. Rice 360 relies on key collaborators such as clinical users and commercial partners to help inform the development process and refine the value propositions for the proposed technology. This talk will provide examples of health technologies developed at Rice 360 and will include a discussion of the successes and challenges associated with this work.

Bio Kelley Maynard is the Director of Technology Development at the Rice 360: Institute for Global Health at Rice University. In this position, she helps bring design projects from the prototype stage into full implementation in clinical settings. Prior to joining Rice 360°, Kelley worked with East Meets West's Breath of Life Program developing neonatal healthcare equipment for use in Southeast Asia. While pursuing her passion for improving global health, Kelley has traveled to hospitals throughout Latin America, Asia, and Africa. She holds an MSE in biomedical engineering and a BSE in mechanical engineering, both from the University of Michigan.

Presenter Bio:

Dr. Stefan Kreuzer received a M.S. in Biology and Biochemistry from Texas Tech University. He then completed medical school a UT Health Science Center in San Antonio, followed by a residency in Orthopedic Surgery at UTMB. Dr. Kreuzer also completed a one year Fellowship in Adult Joint Reconstruction at Baylor College of Medicine. In addition to his clinical practice as an orthopedic surgeon with UT Physicians at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Hospital and First Street Hospital, Dr. Kreuzer serves on several clinical advisory boards and has founded two companies. In 2005, he founded Memorial Bone and Joint Research Foundation, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization and serves as its president. In 2006, Dr. Kreuzer founded Innovative Orthopedic Technologies, LLC. In addition to publishing numerous articles on joint replacement surgeries, he has considerable prosthesis design experience and his design of the Deuce Knee Arthroplasty was named “The Most Innovative Orthopedic Product of 2007” by Wachovia Bank, with Smith & Nephew.

TMC rates for parking will be about $7 or $8 for the meeting ($12 all day). TCH or St. Luke’s Valet are other options at approx. $12.
