Attention Bluemont Civic Association (BCA) Members:

BCA Meets This Wednesday at 7:30 pm
BCA’s first general membership meeting will be held this coming Wednesday evening (9/30/09) at Arlington Traditional School (ATS) on N. Edison St. (behind the McDonald’s and Two Chef’s Pizza on Wilson Blvd.). BCA has invited a staff member from the county’s code enforcement office and Officer O’Daniel (our police department liaison) to speak.

The membership also will discuss the parking issue related to the Penske (formerly Budget) rental trucks operated by D&V Auto Service Center on Wilson Boulevard. A county zoning official recently decided that additional permits are needed to operate the truck rental business and to perform automotive repairs. The property owner’s subsequent request for the permits was denied, which means that D&V is fighting for its survival.

Recycle Computers, Etc., on October 3
On Saturday 10/3/09, Arlington County’s Department of Environmental Services is sponsoring an Environmental Collection and Recycling Event (E-CARE). In addition to collecting household hazardous materials, there will be opportunities to recycle bicycles, computer equipment, small metal items, shoes, clothes, eyeglasses, computers, and medical equipment (wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, ankle braces, etc.). Compost bins will be available for sale for $17 on a first-come, first-served basis.

Computer monitor recycling fee: $15 per item.
Television recycling fee: $20 each (no wooden consoles)

The location of the fall E-CARE is Thomas Jefferson Middle School. More information is available at http://www.arlingtonva.us/departments/EnvironmentalServices/EnvironmentalServicesEnvex.aspx

October 24 Make-A-Difference Day
at Lacey Woods Park!
Come celebrate the national day that honors volunteers. This year Bluemont has it’s very own volunteer spot at Lacey Woods Park. Help remove invasive plants in the morning, and afterward take a guided nature walk highlighting our National Virginia Pine Champion, State Champion Eastern Hemlock, and diverse tree, shrub and fern communities. Join us between 9 and 11:30 am for removal of invasives near the playground, or come for the short walk from 11:30 am to noon.

October 28 Joint Candidates Night
Candidates’ Night in northwest Arlington (sponsored jointly by several civic associations, including BCA) will be held at 7:30 pm on Wednesday, 10/28/09 (BCA’s October meeting is scheduled for the same evening). The location will be the Parish Hall at Resurrection Lutheran Church, 6201 N. Washington Boulevard. Use the Washington Boulevard entrance. Proceed down the stairs and turn right. Candidates for the House of Delegates for the 47th and 48th districts will go first. That segment of the program should take almost an hour. At 8:30 pm, candidates for the Arlington County Board will begin. That segment should finish around 9:15 pm.

Each candidate will begin by giving a 3-minute opening statement. Then, candidates will answer written questions submitted by attendees. (Questions can be submitted prior to the beginning of each forum segment.) A moderator will quickly review the questions received and will select questions to provide a good cross-section on a wide range of issues.
