Hi Louise,
After looking into this I have found that having "hard" tab characters
in the source line can cause this problem (i.e. where a tab character
has been inserted, rather than the appropriate number of spaces). This
can occur if you re-bind the "tab" key via the preferences, if you use
source code from an external source, if you edit the source in a
different editor which uses hard tabs, or if you press ctrl+I to insert
a tab character within BlueJ.
In any case, if you avoid the use of hard tabs you should not see the
problem.
There is an entry in our bug database regarding the problem and I'm
working on a fix.
