So many of you have noticed that profile counts have not been updating
as they have in the past, and we thought we'd step in and let you know
exactly what is going on here and why this change has been put in
place.
Basically, having completely accurate counts caused a lot of problems
for profile pages that experienced high traffic - at several times in
the past few months this has led to difficulties and slowness for the
entire service. These problems were amplified even more by a number of
users who abused the count by running automated scripts trying to bump
up their counts.
Because of this, we've switched to using an estimated count of profile
views; while it's less accurate we believe that keeping the service
running and responsive has to be our first priority. We'll change the
language on the profile pages to reflect this - thanks for your
patience and understanding.
Y'all should notice these count views beginning to update themselves
shortly. Please let us know though if after a few more days, the
counts continue to remain unchanged.

I have to agree Ron....the profile counts could just disappear and I
wouldn't care but from the number of questions we have had on here
recently, I guess some people really look at them. Too bad a few
abusers had to ruin it for everyone...

While I understand some trouble makers can cause problems for everyone
else, I'm not sure that the blog estimating thing really works either,
mainly because its still a mystery of how and when this gets updated.
I recently put an updated tracking code on my blog since Blogger's
counter stopped working and I know that since then approximately 200+
have looked at my blog but Blogger only raised it 100 since its been
stuck. Its not a popularity contest, but my blog is part of my
business and it helps me when people see that my blog is popular and
increasing on a daily basis--and I'm sure other people are in the same
situation. So what are my options? Hiding the inaccurate blogger
count and making my own to update? This seems annoying. I work
really hard to make my blog popular and I really appreciated the
updates. Is it possible to just run an estimate on the huge blogs
that were causing the problem in the first place? Or taking it away
from the troublemakers?

Thanks. I've been wondering about this as well. Mine is still stuck at
the same stat for several weeks now. I know its totally inaccurate.
Would really appreciate a workaround of some sort. I agree with
justine_plays, for business purposes, its sort of important.
Thanks.

Ah OK, I was already wondering why the profile count stucks at 20,000
since a week. I initially assumed this as some magic technical barrier
and was about to report a bug about it.

Well I was wondering how does a new blogger on the blog get to know
how his blog is being accepted.. if anyone was visiting the blog.
Just for self knowledge and not necessarily display that on the blog
page..

I'd also like to know the algorithm for the estimated counts. My
count has not budged since your message.
I don't know how counts are implemented, but I would think keeping a
dynamic count somewhere away from the profile page, like wherever your
controlling software lives (do it in memory, so there's no disk
contention) and updating accurately once a day would solve your
problems and also make users happy that the counts are accurate.
How do we do that? My hit counter was unfrozen but then stopped again.
It stops us communicating with the audience. We don't know if our
posts are successful or not. Come on guys get it fixed.

Is it possible that someone else could be using an automated script on
my profile? I strongly suspect that something like that has happened
and wonder if there is any way I can protect myself from that. I'm
assuming that this new method will protect against this? Many thanks!

An "estimated count" that is "less accurate" seems pretty useless. Is
there a way to turn off or hide the Profile View Counter? Then we can
use StatCounter or another service to show page visits (if we wish)
and eliminate confusion about why the profile views and pageload
counts are often so different.
Also curious as to why we must go to an outside service to provide a
running count of pageloads--is it not possible for Blogger to offer
this function?

I agree with you Justin. Mine jumps about 10 notches every 4 or 5
days. And I have found out that I get 3 times that number every day. I
also get aggressive Google prompts to 'make money' doing this or
other.
