I recently started a blog and have (I think) done all the main things
in terms of adding content and trying to publicize it. Recently I
noticed that when I entered my blogs URL into google and into
webcrawler, it came up!
I use Google webmaster tools which has told me that it has been
scanned by the googlebot. However whenever I type in any keywords that
I had as metatags, nothing comes up!
I hope I don't sound stupid for asking, but is there something I have
missed? Or does it just take a little longer for the tags to be
activated in the search? Otherwise, I will not have any traffic, if
for it to appear the whole URL has to be typed.

Mark,
Maybe you haven't done everything. Doing everything is pretty close
to impossible.
1) Get your friends to link to your blog, where your blog is relevant.
2) Participate in forums, where your blog is relevant, and include the
URL.
3) Comment on other blogs, in relevant comments, and include the URL.
4) Put relevant and useful content in your blog.
5) Some search engines may index your blog using the site feed. Be
sure to activate the feed.
6) When you have done all of the above, your blog will have some
weight. Submit your blog to the search engines, for indexing.
7) Post frequently, and keep the content of your blog moving.

Remember though, none of this happens overnight. Search engines can
take months to index your blog fully. And even when indexed, don't
expect for a search to some key element in your blog to give you an
entry on the first page of the search hits.

I think you are missing the point of how search engines operate.
When you used the search engine to search for your key terms / terms
you used in your meta-tages and other sites are appearing before yours
that means that they have incorporated those search terms better into
the content of their sites and that is why their sites appear before
yours does.
If you want your site to be associated with those search terms then
you have to better incorporate them into your site.
It took me a while to get one of my blogs on the top ranking in the
search engines and like others have said here - it doesn't happen
overnight.
Thanks for all the responses. The metatags I have used have a 95%
relevancy to my pages content (submit express uk), so I thought that
if I used those terms (and I tried a lot of the search terms at once)
it would appear.
But I understand that there seem to be a lot of different ways to be
in the listings. I don't have a great knowledge of how this all works,
but I'm learning slowly! Thanks again for all the above advice :)

I have also tried my search rank on speedtester to see if perhaps I
was at the back of the rankings. However, none of my keywords are
ranked at all in google, msn or yahoo, despite my url being listed :s

I think I may now have solved the problem with the tags/keywords. I
had used keywords that were not in bold or or as titles of my
articles. I had just used ones that were in the articles themselves.
So hopefully that will solve the problem!
