I have spent the past two hours reading all the issues on trying to
use a custom domain with blogspot. I spoke to godaddy yesterday and
they walked me thru and assisted in getting the cname right. Now if
you try to go to my old address
blogspot won't even let me delete the advanced settings tab that has
my custom domain name in it. I get this:
Advanced Settings
Need a domain? Buy one now
Your Domain http:// (Ex: blog.example.com)
Required field must not be blank
This started yesterday, 16 Feb 08 when I followed the instructions for
a custom domain name on the publishing tab. Heck, I can't even get
back to where I was before I started, blogspot won't let me.
Can anyone help me? And please explain so that a computer idiot can
understand.

GoDaddy.com, Inc.
This shows that your domain is still pointed, in GoDaddy DNS, to their
domain parking servers. That keeps your readers, when they try to
browse to your domain, from getting an ugly "404 Not Found". Instead,
they get the GoDaddy version, which advertises GoDaddy services.
You have to setup "CNAME" referral to Google, before you can continue.
Yes I can help you fix this problem. First get into the "total DNS
control panel" for the domain name you want to use.
(www.coastguardreport.org) In the CNAME record area you will find a
line in the Host Column that has "www" And it points to "@". In that
same line over at the far right (in the "actions" column) is an edit
button. It looks like a pencil. Click on that button. When you do you
may get a "Are you sure you want to modify the CNAME record www?
window. Just click yes.
Another screen will open with a box that has three field boxes in it.
One (the top) is for the "alias name" of "www" Just leave that
alone. The second field box is the "host" name. You will want to
enter ghs.google.com in this box. That means that google (Blogspot)
will be hosting your blog site, but your domain name has to point
toward them. And the third box is for TTL. Just leave that alone.
Click OK and you are done. Give a little bit of time to catch up. Now
in your blog settings you need to make sure you have entered that
domain name in your custom domain name box. That should fix the
problem.
What you have done is to point the subdomain of www.yourdomain.org.
(www is just a subdomain of your main domain) to your blog at
blogspot. But since it is hosted on the Google servers that is why
you enter ghs.google.com address. Now when you type in your domain name, it is sent to the google servers where it is rerouted to your
blog. Google servers know to do this because you have entered that
domain name into your custom domain name box under that specific blog.
The @ symbol in the DNS and CNAME record represents the main domain name. So what happens is that the WWW is pointed to the domain name.
And the domain name is hosted at Godaddy. But by doing the above you
interrupt all of that and send the www to google instead. I hope this
helps

I read this and thought "I must have written that".... did you get a
solution? I have spoken to godaddy twice and of course no chance of
reaching google... so i guess I will give up

Custom Domains are a very hot item right now. Everybody, it seems,
wants one. But they aren't totally easy to setup.
Chuck,
You've been pretty helpful to so many who have trouble associating
custom domain names with their blogspot. Thanks for all you do.
I've carefully read much of what you've written on the subject.
Unfortunately, I'm still having trouble. Perhaps you can be of
assistance...
After purchasing a domain with godaddy, following the CNAME
modifications exactly and finally, entering my domain (no www) in the
advanced blogspot settings, I am evidently caught in some sort of
loop. When I direct my browser to my domain name address, the process
bar of the browser shows that it is bouncing between two addresses: my
domain and probably my blogspot domain (I say "probably" my blogspot
address because it changes so fast that I cannot read it well). What
gives?

Contents of the latter suggest you published it to
"greatdayforlunch.com". With "greatdayforlunch.com" having no DNS
definition, that's a waste of time. You can ONLY publish to
"www.greatdayforlunch.com".
Try publishing the blog back to BlogSpot, to
"greatdayforlunch.blogspot.com". If you can get THAT done, let me
know, and we will see where to go from there.
