While Secrets was a GREAT program while it lasted, the author chose
for the program to be required to connect to the secrets server at
http://secrets.textdriven.com on each startup and update.

The server has been producing an 500 server error for over 2 months,
and with no response from the programs author it is obvious that he
has lost interest in secrets.

No. It is more the case that the author doesn't know ruby very well
and for some reason the server keeps going down.
I'm trying desperately to get it into a more reliable form, but have
been stretched for time..

Alcor,

I've got a boatload of space and bandwidth at Dreamhost that I am
hardly using at all. i would be happy to slice off some. :) If Ruby
is the part that's proving unreliable DH supports both it and PHP
(which I have extensive knowledge of). Shoot me an email off-list if
you're interested.

Fancy :) What's holding you up? Other than lack of time to sit down
and finish it :)

I'm not so good with the web technologies. It basically works, but it
is completely open for anyone to edit.
If anyone wants to lend a hand, I'd love some help.

I'd like to have a much nicer form and some ajaxy goodness for showing
the records.

And its in Ruby? :\ I'm more of a PHP jockey, but I've been wanting
to give Ruby a shot for a while now. I'd definitely be willing to
help out some if possible.

I understand that you are having problems coding the new site, but you
should at least put some kind of explanation up at the textdriven.com
address rather than just a 505 error. This is really inconsiderate
towards your users. A simple text message would do... something like:
"The site is being moved to a new location, check my blog for updates
to learn when it is read." With a link to a blog or twitter account
where people can get updates.

I see http://secrets.blacktree.com apparently online, but the secrets
pref pane still gives a 500 error probably because it's looking at
textdriven.com.

Hmmm. "Inconsiderate?" Not to jab or anything, but everytime I got
that error I liked to remind myself that this was a FREE app and the
main functionality was still intact. Your suggetion of posting status
updates on the main site seems reasonable, IF the developer has time.
For what it's worth, I've been happily using SECRETS for months now
and was just wandering through because I wanted to recommend it as an
alternative to Cocktail:

Not everything in this world can be reduced to its price. We still
have social obligations to family, friends, strangers - and even users
of free products, whether or not we benefit financially from those
relations.

I'm glad to see that the problem has been fixed with a new update.

Secrets does nothing that cannot be achieved through other means, it
just puts a nice interface on top of it to make it easier. Secrets
being broken did nothing to stop all the secrets i had already
enabled, nor did it stop me from enabling a few new ones manually via
the terminal.

And in terms of social obligations, feel free to write and support a
competing program, or to contribute to this one, since it is in fact
an open source project, rather than stand back and bitch about it
being broken in some arbitrary forum.
