I’m pretty sure I know the answer to this, but I just want to confirm with everyone.

Is there a way to search the catalog but only for a certain type of thing? I can do this with iTunes stuff, but that’s a custom trigger that comes with the plug-in. You can also do this with contacts, but only by selecting the Address Book and right arrowing into it.

I’m thinking it can’t be done without some sort of “parent” item for the items of the type you want, but it seems like there should be a more standard way.

Don't try to tell me a thing is important to you if the whole of your “support” entails forcing others to spend time and money on it.

Answering my own question for the archives:

Locate the catalog entry that contains the type of thing you’re interested in, which will be “Entry Name (Catalog)” and run the “Search Contents” action. This brings Quicksilver back with nothing selected. When you start typing, you will search only items in that catalog entry. You can optionally create a trigger that does “Search Contents” on the entry.

Note that this doesn’t work well for “parent” catalog entries that have multiple entries underneath them. You’ll want to use one of the children directly.
