Subject: Quicksilver is invisible after booting/rebooting (Mountain Lion)

Hi,

recently I have upgaded my Lion to Mountain Lion and now I have a problem
with Quicksilver - after booting OS, Quicksilver launches, but is
invisible, for example when I hit cmd+space no quicksilver window appears,
but I can type for example "firefox", press Enter and Firefox will open
(its just I can't see qs window or what I'm typing). To fix this I just
open Quicksilver again using spotlight and it appears till next reboot.

anyone have this problem? maybe fixed it somehow ?

Thank you.

P.S. sorry for my bad English.

Yep - that happens to me intermittently too.

Happens to me every time as well.  Every time I reboot, it does show up in
the top bar, but doesn't launch with the hotkeys (Control-Space) until I
futz with the menu.  Once I get it to launch once, it works after that
until the next reboot.
I'm using all the defaults.

Well I'm using BezelHUD (my favourite) and yes, I have tried others.  The problem really is that the issue for me is so intermittent that, as ever in this type of situation, it's very hard to diagnose.

The other thing that happens to me is that sometimes after launch, QS fails to react to my ⌃ ␣ input at which times I often see a second, apparently live (light under icon) version of QS in my dock.  I have to <killall Dock> to make it go away after which the correct version of QS remains in the dock and QS runs happily.

Okay, thanks for the extra information. It probably isn't the interface by
the sounds of it. Try this:

   1. In System Preferences, go to the Users & Groups preference pane and
see if Quicksilver is entered there as a login item for your user. If so,
   remove it from the list.
   2. In Quicksilver's preferences, turn OFF the option to start at login.
   3. Log out and then log back in.
   4. Start Quicksilver manually.
   5. In Quicksilver's preferences, turn ON the option to start at login.
   6. In System Preferences, verify that Quicksilver is NOT listed as a
   login item.

Hopefully, that will resolve it for you. If not, you could try turning off
the option in Quicksilver's preferences to start at login, and instead
manually add it to your user's login items in System Preferences.

That preference is broken under Mountain Lion.

For now, I'd just ignore the preference and manually manage it via Login Items. (I think that's all the preference does anyway.)

P.S.: Just to be clear, checking the Start at Login option in Quicksilver's
preferences is actually supposed to create an entry in System Preferences'
list of login items for the user, but due to this bug<https://github.com/quicksilver/Quicksilver/issues/831>,
it isn't making it. On my system, at least, this does not prevent
Quicksilver from actually starting properly at login (and without the
issues you are experiencing). The purpose of my instructions above is not
to get everything the way it is supposed to be, but to clear out anything
that might be causing weirdness regarding starting at login so that you can
begin with a blank slate.

Heh. You posted while I was writing. Anyway, the preference in QS is
working for me, even though QS never shows up in my login items. I'm not
using any alternative methods to launch it at login (e.g. launchd), so you
can take that information and make of it whatever you can. If you want to
ask more, I'll be happy to discuss it further on github.

Well I've tested this now quite a bit after having followed your instructions, Jon.  I've also read the two posts you sent subsequent to the one I'm replying to.

I did have 'Start at Login' ticked in QS prefs., and not any reference to QS in my startup items and it did launch at login - sometimes twice as I said before.  I've now unticked that.

I now have manually entered QS into my login items and things seem to have settled.  I'll monitor it over the next few days.  The clipboard and shelf which I like to have sliding in from the right hand side of my screen sometimes show one of two patterns of odd behaviour...
they need to be launched manually or
they launch but are black panels seemingly before QS itself has launched.
Makes me wonder if the 'Resume' feature is somehow causing this sort of thing particularly as I wonder if that is what was causing the dual instance of QS in the dock...

Thanks for the details. I'm rewriting the whole business, so hopefully none of that will matter. :-)

Thanks Jon, I've been experiencing the same problem already from Lion and
your 2nd solution finally fixed the bug: turning off the option in
Quicksilver's preferences to start at login, and instead manually add it to
your user's login items in System Preferences.

The hot key combination works now right away from reboot. I'm using version
Beta 69.

Today being day one after doing the same thing, I have had the same experience...

I understand Rob is re-coding that part of QS that mends the 'Start at Login' option in QS prefs which will be great for everyone - thanks Rob.

There are two problems (possibly related). The one I've more or less got fixed is what you mention above. The "Start at login" checkbox in Quicksilver's preferences doesn't correctly add or remove it from your Login Items.

The other problem (the one in this thread) occurs when you do have Quicksilver in your Login Items and you attempt to use it for the first time after logging in. And then there are people who see it twice in the Dock on login. So maybe three problems. Anyway, I don't have any ideas on the last two. We haven't been able to reproduce them.

From my pov, I think the issue is fixed by following Jon's instructions and, when the fix for QS's option to start at login is released, the community will somehow need to be alerted to the fact that they should check in System Preferences>Account>Login items and remove QS if it's there.

Once it's fixed, the pref in QS and the Login Items list in System Preferences will just be two different ways to do the same thing. (It's supposed to be that way now, but one of the ways just doesn't do anything.) So you shouldn't need to do/check anything after the next release. :-)

If that’s the case, this is a known issue that only occurs if an application is full screen and you have Quicksilver’s Dock icon visible.

Subject: Re: Quicksilver is invisible after booting/rebooting (Mountain Lion)

This is an old thread, but I just came across it as I have the same problem
after upgrading Lion and thought I'd add my solution. While I tried the
steps from other contributors below, they did not work for me. I found that
my hotkey (command shift) was bringing up the spotlight function.
Essentially, my shortcut was already assigned to a specific function so
quicksilver was not able to run with the same shortcut and thus would never
open the program. Extremely frustrating. To get rid of spotlight coming up
every time I entered command shift, I did the following:

1. Open system Preferences
2. Choose Keyboard
3. Choose Keyboard Shortcuts
4. Choose Spotlight
5. Uncheck "Show Spotlight Search Field"

And voila! Once I did that, the hotkey option I chose worked like a charm
for opening quicksilver. I think if the other steps in this thread do not
work, you just need to find the shortcut that may be duplicated in your
computer preferences and either change that to make way for the one you
chose for quicksilver.

I'm sure you've already resolved the issue on your end, but hopefully this
will help others.
