One of the goals that I and the other project committers have for project blacklight is to strike a healthy balance between project inclusiveness and the ability to produce high quality software in a short time period, which is easier with a small group of people. Currently, the project committers have a weekly phone call where we assign tasks, check on progress, hash out bug fixes, and decide on features for new releases, as well as discuss ideas for project management and coordination. This is a great system from the point of view of developing software, but lately we've been feeling that it doesn't pay enough attention to the inclusiveness side of this project's goals.
An idea we've been tossing around is to have a monthly skype call where anyone could participate. This might be of interest to you if you have questions or concerns that you want to discuss with the project's programmers, or if you have a feature request you want to advocate for, or if you just want to have more input in the decision making for the project.
Our skype calls are usually on Fridays at 1pm North American Eastern time. I propose that our first all-comers call be October 9 at this usual time. If you'd like to participate:
1. Email me your skype id and let me know you want to be included
2. Before the call, please make sure you have headphones, a microphone, and the fastest internet service available to you (e.g., if you have a choice, please use a land line at your office, not the wireless at the coffeeshop). The more people we have in a skype call the more difficult it is to speak, and one bad audio setup can ruin things for everyone.
As we get closer to the date, I'll send out a reminder email and we can start forming an agenda.
Hello Bess... wonderful idea... Two questions come immediately to mind: 1 - Will it get recorded for later playback for those who miss the session or can't set an alarm clock properly, or just didn't set one to begin with...? Or those who might want to hear what goes on but to reluctant to call in during the session... 2 - Does the number of participants degrade the quality and speed even if they just come to listen? I might want to join in just to listen as I am sure I won't have anything to contribute to a group of open source techies in full tech-speak mode... (grin)

I hadn't considered recording the call, but I guess we could if people
wanted us to. Honestly, I'd rather not unless there's a big public
demand for it. I think being recorded can make people feel stilted and
I'd rather just have a conversation.
Just listening (as long as your microphone is turned off) doesn't seem
to degrade the quality and speed of the conversation, so I think that
would be a great way to participate, for people who want to know
what's going on but don't feel that they have a lot to say.

Hello Bess, most excellent... _ _ _ Understood. Many don't like to have to defend a change of mind or opinion weeks or months after they make a statement they believe is completely true at the time they made it... and others hog the conversation simply because they know it is recorded while some might not participate as fully as they would otherwise. . . A compromise could be that those who miss the live chat and want it can ask for it, and you (or the official recorder) will send it to them directly without posting on a public site... Perhaps others might ask once it becomes a more popular avenue to discuss issues openly.
I can wait - the river rushes, but the ocean is patient. _ _ _ I'll plan on listening in... should be fun, not that I'll really learn anything - it'll probably sound like wiretapping a phone call in Babylonian! hahahah _ _ _

This thread seems to have lost momentum, but UW-Madison would be happy to participate in a "public" Skype call.
Here are some blacklight related issues that are currently important to us:
* Updating - Naomi's "vendor drop" approach worked well for us (thanks!), but the upgrading process and documentation could be polished.
* Themes - We're overwriting most of the views and extending the application helper considerably. Someday real theming would be nice to explore. Maybe Typo's approach or this idea from Dr Nic: http://tinyurl.com/yj2jscv
* Full Text - How are blacklight installs integrating full-text digital collections? Search surrogates and push users to full-text apps like XTF for display?
* SolrMarc - We've tested quite a few ways to index our 8M marc records. Using just three functions from SolrMarc and leaving the rest of the code behind seems to be the fastest.

I'm waiting on Skype for an invite or something else to indicate the call is working... nothing so far ... since the initiator was not provided, I don't know who to contact...
We'll try to make this work for a future date. Several of the
regulars aren't available this week, and we didn't quite get things in
order for an open call. We'll keep you posted on rescheduling.
Sorry we didn't have it together for an open skype call today. We
will definitely get that rescheduled.
If folks have topics they would like discussed, I encourage them to
post to the list, as Eric did.
I would advise against sending skype ids to the list, but sending them
to the committers is a good idea:
Bess
Matt M.
Naomi
Jessie
Vernon
Jason
Sean
Molly
Jennifer
That way we can add them to our contacts and whoever hosts the call
will have them.

The move to Git will affect this, hopefully making it easier. And
yes, of course we want polished documentation. We always welcome
documentation contributions :-) and suggestions.

also looming at Stanford.

awesome. Learning more about how folks are generating their Solr
indexes, and what data is in them, seems like a great topic for a wiki!
