today announced the availability of AltaVista Search My Computer
Private eXtension (PX) software, a fast and powerful solution to
searching and indexing information on the desktop. With AltaVista
Search My Computer PX, finding information inside Windows 95 and
Windows NT documents on PCs is as quick and easy as finding
information with AltaVista on the Internet. AltaVista Search My
Computer PX is priced at $29.95, and will be available for down-
loading on the Web at http://altavista.software.digital.com on
December 5, or from resellers beginning December 16. Until November
18, a special price of $19.95 is available for AltaVista Visionary
Club members on the Web at http://altavista.software.digital.com/
blimp.html.
Using the same web browser interface and powerful technology
that drives the award-winning AltaVista Internet search service,
which now receives over 20 million queries per day, AltaVista Search
My Computer PX gives Internet/intranet users a simple, extremely
fast tool for finding information within their public or private
domains. With a single click of an on-screen button, users can
seamlessly search from the World Wide Web to their PC and back again
in seconds without changing applications or learning new interfaces.

With AltaVista Search My Computer PX, individuals can
automatically build a full word index of all HTML documents and more
than 200 file types stored on their local PC and shared network
drives, including applications from Microsoft, Lotus, Word Perfect
and Eudora. Navigating with the familiar AltaVista Search interface,
users can find all documents, files, and email messages and attachments
containing a selected search term.
Within seconds, the program's powerful query engine produces
search results, including ranking information. Clicking on a
document in the AltaVista index automatically opens both the
document and its launch application. The index is stored locally,
giving users access to searching when the system is not connected
to a network. The program can be scheduled to update the index at
predetermined times, or upon request by the user.
AltaVista Search My Computer PX includes an automated
installation, making setup fast and easy. The indexer can also be
scheduled by the Windows 95 System Agent, providing a visual or
audible indicator when it finishes building an index. It supports
popular application types, including Microsoft Word, Excel and
PowerPoint documents, and Microsoft Exchange and Eudora ProV3.0
email messages.
