OpenVMS AFFINITY WAVE ONE FOR THE ENTERPRISE
64-Bit OpenVMS Version 7.0, New Transaction Processing Software,
Client/Server Tools & System Integration Services Provide
Wave One Seamless Integration of OpenVMS & Windows NT Operating
Systems for Enterprise Computing Solutions
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., December 4, 1995 -- Digital Equipment
Corporation and its partners today announce the first wave of
products and services that facilitate the integration of OpenVMS and
Windows NT. These capabilities make it increasingly easy to
develop, deploy, integrate and manage applications across both
platforms in a three-tier client/server environment.
Being announced today at the Digital Equipment Computer User Society
(DECUS) in San Francisco on December 4-6, 1995 are the following:
o OpenVMS Version 7.0 -- mission-critical 64-bit operating
system enhancements for the unlimited high-end
o Very Large Memory (VLM) capabilities with support from
Oracle Rdb7 and planned future support from Oracle7
o Three-tier client/server Fault Tolerant Transaction
Processing for Windows NT and for combined Windows NT &
OpenVMS environments
o Affinity development tools and complete development
environments from both Digital and partners
o Implementation Services to assist customers in deploying the
Affinity environment
With the delivery of Affinity Wave One, current OpenVMS
customers can easily add Windows NT servers -- along with Windows
NT's huge application library -- to their computing environment.
Windows NT users can easily add OpenVMS back-end servers to create
Windows-based solutions with true 24X365 availability, disaster-
tolerance and scalability to the world's largest clusters.
"What we've done here is mesh OpenVMS and Windows NT together
so that customers can enjoy the scalability, reliability and
cost-effectiveness they need while making a software investment in
the operating environment of the future," said Wes Melling, vice
president of Digital's OpenVMS Systems Business Group. "In
addition, they can enjoy this superior combination on the high-
performance, low-cost hardware platform of Alpha," said Melling.
Delivering the Unlimited High-End: 64-Bit OpenVMS Version 7.0
OpenVMS provides extended capabilities for Windows NT users and
applications in a client/server environment. The latest release of
OpenVMS delivers 64-bit data addressing on Alpha -- the leading
64-bit hardware platform. With this combination, customers are able
to reap the full benefits of bullet-proof computing for data-
intensive applications such as micromarketing, data warehousing and
on-line transaction processing.
Another significant addition in Version 7.0 of OpenVMS is Very
Large Memory, or VLM. VLM capabilities enable databases to run up
to 200 times as fast as conventional 32-bit databases. Digital, a
leader in the emerging VLM/VLDB market, offers 64-bit support now on
both OpenVMS and Digital UNIX computing environments.
In addition, Oracle Corporation is demonstrating support of
OpenVMS Version 7.0 with the introduction here at DECUS of Oracle
Rdb7 -- a 64-bit VLM implementation that brings OpenVMS users
order-of-magnitude performance increases already demonstrated on
Digital UNIX with Oracle7. Oracle is also announcing today a
commitment to deliver Oracle7 on OpenVMS V7.0 in the near future.
Delivering New High-Speed Data Back-Up Capability: Spiralog
Version 1.0
OpenVMS Version 7.0 offers fast, on-line back-up with Spiralog
Version 1.0 -- a new 64-bit log-structured file system with a
10-Terabyte design center. The new file system is up to two times
faster then the previous Files-11 file systems, and existing
applications can run completely unchanged. Spiralog is designed
for high-availability and is a fully clustered file system with
transparent server fail-over, load balancing, compatibility with
shadowing, striping and RAID 5.
Delivering New Windows NT Transaction Processing & Client/Server
Tools for Affinity
As key components of the Affinity program, Digital is
delivering the first mission-critical transaction processing
capabilities for Windows NT. Included are the following new
products:
ACMSxp V1.0 for Windows NT and ACMSxp V2.0 for OpenVMS
ACMSxp is used by customers to develop, deploy and manage
distributed client/server transaction processing applications.
ACMSxp is available across OpenVMS, Windows NT or Digital UNIX-based
systems and uses industry standard DCE. ACMSxp V1.0 is the first
industry tested, mission-critical TP software for Windows NT, and it
is easily integrated with the OpenVMS environment.
Reliable Transaction Router V3.1 for Windows NT
Digital's Reliable Transaction Router (RTR) is wide-area
fault-tolerant middleware with transaction integrity. RTR is for
business applications that require the ability to execute
transactions reliably, in real time, without any interrupt of
service, across widely distributed systems. RTR is deployed in
several of the world's stock exchanges, transportation systems,
ticketing agencies and other environments that cannot afford to have
a single moment of downtime. The delivery of RTR for Windows NT will
allow customers to build fault-tolerant networks of Windows NT-based
systems that are easily integrated with RTR on OpenVMS.
Both ACMSxp and RTR use the three-tier client/server model for
application architectures. Digital customers in over 15,000 sites
already have three-tier client/server systems in operation, making
Digital the unquestioned leader in this emerging technology.
DECADMIRE V3.0, the ACMS Family Development Tool
DECADMIRE, an application development tool from Digital,
provides a vehicle for developers to quickly and easily design,
develop, prototype, and test applications for the Microsoft Windows
and the Digital ACMS family of products. DECADMIRE generates ODBC,
ACMS and ACMSxp (including STDL and DCE) applications in addition to
Microsoft Visual Basic, DEC C, COBOL, FORTRAN, or Pascal source
code.
With DECADMIRE designers and developers can work individually
or in teams to deliver three-tier client/server applications.
DECADMIRE also extends the Microsoft Visual Basic environment to
support mission critical applications and will be available in March
of 1996.
Delivering New Development Tools for Affinity Application Providers
Digital, Microsoft and their partners are collaborating to
support multiple styles for creating applications on Windows NT and
for deployment on both Windows NT and OpenVMS. A number of
Digital's premier software partners are introducing application
development tools, databases, software tools, financial, health care
and other applications for the Affinity environment. A number of
these applications will ship shortly, and will support the
integrated environment of Windows NT and OpenVMS.
For Affinity Wave One, Digital has focused on partnering with
software developers that deliver tools and applications for large
Windows-based environments that require the strengths of OpenVMS.
Delivering New Services for Affinity
Digital is announcing the availability of 31 System Integration
Services designed to support the Affinity environment, which
include:
o Services to align business and IT strategies
o Services to build an Affinity client/server infrastructure
o Services to integrate and migrate to the new environment
o Services for Affinity management and operations consulting
Digital is also announcing the availability of new services
from leading service providers.
Digital Equipment Corporation is the world's leader in open
client/server solutions from personal computing to integrated
worldwide information systems. Digital's scalable Alpha platforms,
storage, networking, software and services, together with industry-
focused solutions from business partners, help organizations compete
and win in today's global marketplace.
