ATLANTA, July 23 (Reuter) - A great swim by Gary Hall
enabled the United States to maintain their monopoly of the
Olympic men's 4x100 freestyle relay title on Tuesday.
Hall, the individual 100 freestyle silver medallist,
clinched the seventh U.S. victory in the event with a fine swim
on the anchor leg, taking over with his team third.
Russia, with individual 100 freestyle champion Alexander
Popov swimming second, set the pace until Hall took charge.
The Americans, who have also won all seven world titles in
the event, won in three minutes 15.41 seconds, just 0.30 of a
second outside the world mark they set at the Pan Pacific
championships here last August.
Russia were second in 3:17.06 and Germany third in 3:17.20.
