using the api

Hi, this will be a very noob question, but I'm new to all this.

I want to use the /v3/shorten from http://dev.bitly.com/links.html on
an html page that will link to my bit.ly account and shorten a url
without having to go to bit.ly itself.

Basically I've modified the code from
http://support.google.com/googleanalytics/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=55578
to suit my work which all works fine and returns a tracked link. I'd
like to add a script that will then add an option to shorten this link
via bit.ly (using my api key to save it on my account).

However, http://dev.bitly.com/links.html kind of assumes I know what
to do with that information and I've no idea how to start writing a
code to make use of the api...can anyone point me in the right
direction?
