In the Web UI it is possible to set a custom name for the short URL,
and, if this custom name has not been selected by anyone before, it
replaces the automatically generated bitly hash. Is there a way to do
this thtough the API? I have not found it in the documenraiton

Thank you

No, there is no API for creating bitly urls with custom names.

Actually, there is ... just provide the "keyword" parameter to the
shorten method and you get the same functionality. This parameter is,
for some reason, undocumented in the API.

As far as I'm aware, the keyword parameter was undocumented because it was an unofficial API method and has since been removed. If you try to use the keyword parameter, the API returns an error to say that they keyword has already been used, whatever you set.

I sincerely hope that decision will be reversed. It's an extremely
useful piece of functionality, and both the bit.ly and j.mp sites
still expose a box for a keyword ...

The keyword functionality was removed do to abuse by keyword
squatters. It's possible we may add this back for select partners, but
there are a few more urgent items on the API roadmap at this point.
