I did a similar lay over on my way to Nairobi a few years back, and I left
my bags at the baggage check in the airposrt, then took the Tube directly
from there to Picadilly Circus. I can't remember where I ate lunch, but
even if I could I wouldn't recomend it. It was this American sports
restaurant and the food was nothing to write home (or anywhere else) about.

I'd like to check out this plan with someone who is in or has recently
been to London. It's how I spend the day I have in London in transit to
Nairobi. I'm primarily concerned about how much time it will take & if
you can still leave luggage at Victoria Station given the ever present
concerns about bombings. In addition, I'd love to have suggestions of
good, cheap places to eat in Picadilly Cicus & near Victoria Station.
9 am Arrive Heathrow
10 am Bus to Victoria Coach Station via National Express
11 am Arrive & Leave luggage
11:30 am Take tube to American Express office in Picadilly Circus
12:00 pm Eat Lunch
1:00 pm Take tube to Tottenham Court Road & visit British Museum
5:00 pm Museum closes
5:30 pm Eat Dinner
6:30 pm Take tube to Victoria Coach Station & pick up luggage
7:00 pm Take bus to Gatwick Airport
8:00 pm Arrive Gatwick
10:30 pm Fly to Nairobi

Debbie, I hadn't paid attention to this posting but my wife & I just made
the US -> Gatwick -> Nairobi trip in June. Your timing looks pretty good.
I suggest that you leave your bags at Gatwick "Left Baggage", it cost
1 1/2 L each piece. We had arranged to have our non-carry-on bags checked
through from our departure city to Nairobi, even though we changed airlines.
We used the train from Gatwick to Victoria Station - there are two
an express & a local. After our day in the air & in London we were pretty
"whipped" and dirty. You can pay a pound for a towel & soap at Gatwick and
take a shower and change some of your clothes. It sort of made the next long
leg to Nairobi more bearable. The phone number for the towel & soap is
shown on a sign in the WC and they bring it to you in a few minutes. They
didn't require the deposit as the sign said.
Passport control was fast in London, slow in Nairobi though Customs
was fast.
By the way we ate our dinner at a place a few blocks from Victoria
Station - "Stage Door" I think it was. Eating there removed some of the
anxiety of not having time for the tube, luggage, etc.

really needs another week or so... :) Try having your luggage
