Hello All,

I have a video that needs to be put into my training, but I am not sure what the best format is for the video to be in for consistent video playback across a variety of browsers and devices. Our target audience is desktop computers - i.e. all we need is consistency in various desktop Windows and MacOS browsers (IE, Chrome, Safari, Firefox), and not mobile devices such as iOS, Android etc.

Thanks,
Tristin

If you don't need mobile support I would use the swf video format and
use the flash player to view it. It streams well and gives very
consistent playback results in all browsers.

Hi Tristin,

For now, you will need to stick to swf as Clifton suggests or wmv to play
via Windows Media Player or QuickTime. I'm hopeful that ToolBook will add
support for HTML 5 video formats at some point in the future. Once that
happens, you will want to make your video in mp4, webm, and ogv formats as
well. My blog from last year on this subject might be of interest. It also
has a link to a free utility for creating the different formats you need.

Clifton,

Does SWF work for Mac also? I thought there was an issue with Flash and
Mac. Thank you for clarifying.

Thank you guys for all the really great feedback. I greatly appreciate it. My only question is now with the Universal Media Player in the Catalog the user is given a taskbar at the bottom of the screen to Play, Pause, etc. the video. How can I get them same shell for the Flash Media Player?

Thank you,
Tristin

Hi Tristin,

Unfortunately Flash playback controls are only available internally
within the Flash movie itself. Alternately, our JavaScript PowerPac
provides Flash movie playback controls for rewind, play, pause, stop,
and close. You may be able to convert your movies to Flash video and get
the playback controls depending on the conversion utility that you use.
The one from DVDVideoSoft offers that support. The downside of the
resulting conversion is that the playback controls only interact with
the movie itself and not with ToolBook. So you will not be able to tell
when a movie has finished playing or where the playhead is in the
process. The JavaScript PowerPac Flash controls provides all that
functionality for ToolBookers. If you want to explore the PowerPac, it
can be freely downloaded and used for 21 days before investing in a license.
