dear bit.listserv.tesl-l readers
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 It's getting a bit tiresome seeing one misguided American after another with their cutsie little yellow or red-white-blue ribbons on their outsized SUVs. Yeah, I guess it's the thing to do; maybe part of that whole soccer-mom culture. Unfortunately, the only thing they demonstrate is that the person... more »

The top-level government memo marked "SECRET AND STRICTLY PERSONAL", dated eight months before Bush sent us into Iraq, following a closed meeting with the President, reads, "Military action was now seen as inevitable. Bush wanted to remove Saddam through military action... more »

mark of the people
In the coming months a black spot will pop up everywhere . . . on store windows and newspaper boxes, on gas pumps and supermarket shelves. Open a magazine or newspaper - it's there. It's on TV. Many of them have great minds and yet the act of translating their thoughts in written form seems to be a problem. I have heard of the... more »

Dictation
I, too, have resurrected dictation from pedagogical obscurity. I teach a group of Spanish-speakers at the intermediate level of an adult ESL program. I spend a lot of time developing their aural comprehension of smaller units, focusing often on reduction problems that are complicated by L1 vs. L2 grammatical and phonological differences. dictation
I suggest that dictation be used for PRACTICING various things, rather than TESTING.
