Subject: Graduate studentships in East-Central European History (UK)
TWO POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS IN EAST-CENTRAL EUROPEAN HISTORY
The Department of History, University of Southampton (Southampton, UK),
is offering two postgraduate scholarships for three years in the area of
East-Central European History, starting on 1 October 2004.
The awards, made by the AHRB (Arts and Humanities Research Board), are
fulltime, fully-funded, and will lead to the degree of PhD. Both
successful candidates will work on a project led by Professor Mark
Cornwall entitled, Memorialization and Regeneration: the Male Wartime
Generation in the Successor States 1918-1930. The project will study the
impact of the First World War in the 1920s across the territory of the
former Habsburg Empire, with a focus on memory, commemoration and the
social-political role of war veterans. One postgraduate is required to
work on Austria (and will need to learn or have a reading knowledge of
German); the other will work on Croatia (and will need to learn or have
a reading knowledge of Croat). There is considerable flexibility as to
the research topics chosen.
The posts are ideal for individuals seeking to begin research in the
field of modern European history and study in a research-led environment
in southern England. The qualification to apply is a good degree in
History or in a discipline relevant to the project. Some Masters level
experience would be an advantage.
Deadline for receipt of applications: Friday 16 July 2004.
