I'm sending this message back to the list with the permission of its writer,
since it answers the question I posed about the location for Oxford
University Press in a clear and matter-of-fact way, and I thought others
might be interested.

Oxford University Press has two offices that publish music, one in Oxford
UK, the other in New York. You can infer place of publication from the way
the copyright line is configured:

Copyright Oxford University Press [year] = Oxford UK. The street address of
the Oxford office is normally shown below the copyright notice.

Copyright [year], Oxford University Press, Inc. = New York (the composer is
a member of ASCAP). "Printed in U.S.A." normally appears after the
copyright notice.

Copyright [year], Oxford Music/U.S.A. = New York (the composer is a member
of BMI). "Printed in U.S.A." normally appears after the copyright notice.

Place of printing is not definitive, as some UK publications have been taken
on for reprint in the US, but in combination with the wording of the
copyright notice, it's a pretty sure indicator.

If you have any specific questions about Oxford publications, please address
them to Brian Hill (brian...@oup.com), our US Manager of Copyrights and
Licensing.

With best wishes,

Subject: [MLA-L] Place for Oxford University Press?

I'm cataloging several music scores published by Oxford University Press.
None of them has a place of publication on the item, but the records I find
in OCLC for Oxford UP scores seem to have a variety of inferred places,
among them [London], [Oxford], and [New York]. How can I know which is the
right place? Any insights would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Patricia
