XMIT Manager

Hello,

I am currently not able to install XMIT manager on my system. The error
says that the software is not compatible with my PC(64 BIT).

Does anyone find a XMIT manager which is compatible with 64 bit PC.

Software pack downloaded from cbttape.org.

That's why I suggested to move already installed version from any old machine. Simply bypass installer program. There are only a couple of suggestions

1) Under Win7 you can setup and run a WinXP Virtual Machine. A free XP
system image is available for download from Microsoft to run under Win7. You
should be able to install and run old software in the XP VM. I've had to do
that with a number of packages. It's a bit slow starting up the VM but runs
fine after that.

2) Find an already installed version of XMIT under XP and copy it from the
PGM File. Put it in your PROGRAM(x86) file. It may work

The problem is that the installer software is 16-bit. XMIT Manager itself is 32-bit and runs without a problem on 64-bit systems. You just cannot use the installer to put it on your new machine, you have to do it manually from an existing installation on an XP or lower-level system.

Copy the folder on your old machine which contains the XMIT manager software (probably under "C:\Program Files") to a USB stick and write it in a new folder on your 64-bit system in the "C:\Program Files (x86)" folder.

Then if you want you can create a shortcut to the EXE file and cut-n-paste the shortcut to your desktop.

Finally, add ".XMI" and ".XMIT" extensions to the folder view options and point to the XMIT Manager executable as the one to handle such files. Now you can just double-click on an XMIT file and it will open.

To make it clear, the installer won't run on Windows 7 but the XMITMGR
program runs just fine.

So as others have suggested copy XMITMGR.EXE from an XP system and store
it in Program Field (x86) on the Windows 7 machine and you should be fine.

The problem is not the executable. The real 64-bit problem is in the
installer. The installer that is used with XMIT only installs to 32-bit based
Windows.


If someone updated the installer to a newer version, things would be fine.

So copying the XMIT directory works except you don't get all of the links done.

support all Windows versions.

I do not believe that the original author is interested in any update of the software, but I am willing to be proven wrong. No source is available, as far as I know.

The open-source portable unXMIT is very encouraging. I know the
programmer, DeWitt Knapp and he's a great guy, so hopefully this will be a
good option going forward.

It is written in Java using the portable Eclipse RCP/SWT framework, and
there are packages for Windows, Mac, Linux, etc. The source is also
available under GPLv3, so if you don't like it you have the freedom to
change it.

I converted to XI XMIT Manager https://www.xiframe.com/index.php?page=xixmiexplorer - best I've seen and doesn't have a few of the bugs I've encountered with XMITMGR. XMITMGR is dated as witnessed by its circa 16 bit installer. Rather than installing XMITMGR on a 32 bit Windows and then lifting it onto a 64 bit Windows, I'd go with this utility - its free.

And just FYI: Windows supports one level of bitness older - meaning that Windows 64 bit supports 64 bit pgms (i.e. native) and a 32 bit translation layer. Windows 32 bit does the same - supports 32 bit pgms (i.e. native) and a 16 bit translation layer. This is why XMITMGR's installation pgm which is 16 bit doesn't work on Windows 64 bit. 16 bit was circa Windows 3.1 FWIW. But try my suggestion - newer and better pgm; no bugs encountered as of yet, actively developed, better than a JAVA based utility that I tried which had several bugs, including a JAVA penchant for not putting focus in the right area, resulting in the user having to mouse click, but I digress.
