Why do I want to do this? Because all hell has broken loose here with our 3494-B10. I use its Web interface to do an Inventory, then do a "Request Inventory Upload". After doing this a D SMS,LIB(...),DETAIL shows over 12,000 scratches. I had been around 400. This is what I expect. Within 5 minutes, it is back to 400. I cannot figure out what the hell is going on. Yes, IBM hardware support has been called. My boss did that last night. I don't yet know the results, except that it cannot be fixed yet because the scratch count is still wrong.
The 3494-B10 is attached to a 3854. The 3854 is shared between z/OS and the distributed platform. It has been, IMO, a piece of diseased excrement from day one.

can do a LISTC on the TCDB (SYS1.VOLCAT.VGENERAL et al.) and then write
a program to read that to produce a similar report. But I cannot figure
out any way to unload the 3494-B10's internal database of tape volumes
and their statuses.

Search for the BVIR utility, Bulk Volume Information Retrieval. I have
the TS7700 information, but I know this utility was already available
for the B10/B12.
It has o.a. a physical volume to logical volume mapping report.

Another report that you might want to check is the Volume Status

Good Luck,
Kees.
z/OS 1.10. We have a 3584 and a TS3500. Old. Right now I'm running a CTSSYNC of over 25,000 tapes in SCRATCH status to CA1, but not according to ISMF. When that finishes (1.5 hours?), the IBM support person will call back with some ALTER commands to do. If that doesn't work, then we'll get with the hardware guy (currently on site) and do some more stuff.
I really hate this box.

I can recommend the TS7700, I love it.
Kees.
So, ok, you are not licensed to run rmm, but, you could run the conversion
tools to the point where you build the rmm CDS. Without running DFRMM
subsystem, run EDGUTIL and use the reults to show you what is mismatching.
Depending on your release you have some SYSIN options to compare just a
subset of volumes.
Mike Wood RMM Development
Thank you for the suggestion. I'm going to read up on the current CA1 to see if they have an equivalent function that I'm just not aware of. I'm not really all that CA1 literate. I got roped into this because, uh, because ... . I don't know why I got roped into this.
I got what I needed by using a CA1 Earl report of all tapes along with an ISMF print out of the same (ISMF option 2.3). I then downloaded this information to my Linux desktop where I have more powerful tools and don't mess with the mainframe CPU usage. I found the differences and did a SYNC on them.

John,
AFAIK (but that's not 100% sure), there is no such CA1 utility.
I have a job that regularly checks TMC, TCDB and VTS contents:
I use GRW for TMC data (Earl will produce the same).
I use IDCAMS, LISTC VOLENT(*), to list the TCDB (much easier I think)
I use BVIR to list the VTS contents of both clusters of our TS7700 grid
(I think a B10/20 does not have these).
Then I have a SAS job that produces a list of status differences and
other interesting information from the combined data sources.
Any news about the cause of your problems?
Kees.

I didn't find one, either.

I have this.
> I use IDCAMS, LISTC VOLENT(*), to list the TCDB (much easier I think)
True. I used to do that. OAM level 2 support told me, unconditionally, to never do that ever again. They said that IDCAMS with not the right way to do it and could result in errors.
> I use BVIR to list the VTS contents of both clusters of our

> (I think a B10/20 does not have these).
BVIR on the B10 does not have the ability to list the VTS' internal database.
> Then I have a SAS job that produces a list of status differences and
> other interesting information from the combined data sources.
No SAS here any more. I run my jobs on the mainfame. I then download the information to my Linux/Intel desktop. I run a Perl script which massages that. I then use the massaged data to create two PostgreSQL tables. I then do a JOIN on that to report on the differences. Finally, I use that report to create input to CTSSYNC and submit a job to do the SYNC.
>
> Any news about the cause of your problems?
Yes. The CE caused it. We had a PC failure on the VTS (the LM console). The CE had to replace it. When she did that, she also installed some new microcode because she didn't have access to the level we had been running. That disabled the PC's modem. It also reset the EXPIRE HOLD time from 0 to 33 hours. This last is what I did not know. It is what caused the confusion. I would expire some VTS tapes, but the scratch count would not increase. Well, if I had just waited around for 33 hours, I would have seen the update from the D SMS,LIB(...),DETAIL command. Again, nobody bothered to tell us that the CE did this or what its ramifications were.
