I was talking to Arnie Cashinghino (founder and longtime proprietor
- 15 years - of the CBT Tape collection) yesterday, and he told me about
a wonderful site that archives old copies of websites. It is called the
"wayback machiine". If you Google "wayback machine" you'll get to
them. I think their main site is called www.archive.org. This has
immediate and vast and enormous consequences for us. I will mention one
of them.
As you may know, Xephon publications are now controlled by Bob
Thomas (z-Journal, etc.), and they gave the Xephon support rights to
www.cbttape.org a while back, after they stopped publishing the Xephon
magazines themselves. As current CBT Tape proprietor, I was initially
able to extract the old Xephon magazines from the current www.xephon.com
website, get rid of PDF protections, when they were there, and make much
of the stuff available at www.cbttape.org/xephon. I think we cover 1998
thru 2005 inclusive. However, we didn't know how to get old Xephon
articles that were from before 1998. Thomas Publications didn't have
easy access to them.
One breakthough came later. Eugene Vogt had a personal archive,
which contained a lot of the older MVS articles. He made those
available on File 814 of the CBT Tape collection. But now that we know
about Wayback Machine, we can go ourselves to the archives of
www.xephon.com and extract all the (available) old articles for
ourselves. I did it (to try it out) and I was able to access a lot of
old articles from the 1996 copy of www.xephon.com!
This opens up a whole new world to us, because this search can be
made for many, many other websites too, of all kinds. The Internet has
opened enormous capabilities to us, that we never had before.
So go to it, folks! All the best of everything to all of you.
Sincerely, Sam Golob
