In the 1911 Encyclopaedia Britannica article "John o' Groat's House"
(the very north of Scotland), we learn the cowry-shell, /Cypraea
europaea/, is locally known as “John o' Groat's bucky.” I always
thought the cowry was an exotic tropical species, but this sounds
European, and its Scottish nickname has a familiar ring.
