Hi, folks! This is a list of tv shows with gay, lesbian, other sexual
minority, and gay/straight AIDS themes, for the tv week of Saturday
12/18/93 to Friday 12/24/93. Based on TV listings for the Phila/NJ/NYC
area.

Sat >> CITIZEN COHN. Airs: Sat. 12/18/93, 10:30 am, HBO-2. 1992
$ made-for-HBO movie about Roy Cohn, who served as Sen. Joseph
McCarthy's right hand man in the 1950s, with the Congressional
Committee on Un-American Activities. Roy Cohn was an anti-Semitic
Jew, and a homophobic, self-denying homosexual. He later died of
AIDS. James Woods gives a powerful performance in this
no-holds-barred portrayal.

Sat >> GIRLIE TALK. Airs Sat. 12/18/93, 3:30 pm, MTV. Interview with
Madonna, who discusses her personal life among other topics.
Bisexual content likely, not definite.

Sun >> CITY OF HOPE. Airs Sun. 12/19/93, 11:05 pm, Prism. 1991 John
$ Sayles movie about corruption in a fictional New Jersey town. A
key plot involves whether or not one of the characters is gay.

Sun >> POISON IVY. Airs: Sun-Mon, 12/19-20/93, 4:05 am, on HBO. I've
$ never seen this, but it supposedly contains a kiss between Drew
Barrymore and Sarah Gilbert.

Mon >> ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT. Guests include Tom Hanks, who will be
L discussing his portrayal (in the new movie "PHILADELPHIA") of a gay
lawyer who is fired when his bosses discover that he has AIDS.
Airs Monday night 12/20/93 at 7:00 pm on Philadelphia PA ch. 3
(KYW).

Tue >> CITIZEN COHN. See Above. Airs: Tues. 12/21/93, 9:00 pm,
$ HBO-2

Tue >> JANE WHITNEY: TRANSSEXUALISM AND TEENS. Airs nationally on Tues.
L 12/21/93, including Tues.-Wed., 12/21-22/93, 1:30 am, Phila. PA
ch. 57 (WGBS).

Thu >> POISON IVY. See above. Airs: Thurs. 12/23/93, 5:25 am,
$ HBO-2

Thu >> THIS MORNING. Airs Thurs. 12/23/93, 7:00 am, CBS. Guests include

Thu >> PROTOCOL. Airs Thurs. 12/23/93, 4:30 pm, HBO-2. 1984 Goldie Hawn
$ movie in which she appears as a cocktail waitress who becomes a US
Ambassador. In the movie, her best friends and housemates are a
gay male couple, who are portrayed positively. Recommended.

Thu >> CONNIE CHUNG. Airs Thurs. 12/23/93, 9:00 pm, CBS. Scheduled
interviews include both Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington, who will
be discussing their performances in "PHILADELPHIA". (Washington
appears as the lawyer who represents Hanks' character in a
discrimination suit.)

Thu >> ROLLING STONE '93: THE YEAR IN REVIEW. Airs Thurs-Fri.,
L 12/23-24/93, midnight, some Fox stations (including Phila. PA WTXF

It's been a while since I've listed the areas in which the lesbian
& gay variety & entertainment series IN THE LIFE airs. The
broadcasts that I list in the weekly postings only include those
for which I have specific air dates/times. However, there are many
additional stations that broadcast the show without publishing
their air dates & times far enough in advance for the IN THE LIFE
program guide to list them. As of the latest program guide, IN THE
LIFE airs in the following areas on the tv stations indicated. If
your area is listed but you don't know when the monthly show airs,

That's it for this week's TV shows. Not too many, due to holiday
programming. But this week's TV Guide contains an interesting letter to
the editor from Julianne Sallee of Pocahontas, AZ. She writes that her
grandchildren will not be watching Sesame Street anymore, because "it was
reported to me that Bert and Ernie are gay".

TV Guide responds: "Editor's Note: According to the Children's Television
Workshop: 'Bert and Ernie do not portray a gay couple and there are no
plans for them to do so in the future. They are puppets, not humans.'"
Now we know. <g>

Happy holidays everyone! (Happy Chanukah, Merry Christmas, Happy Kwanzaa,
Good Solstice, Felicidades en el Dia de Los Reyes, and Happy New Year!)
