Forget Tinky-Winky — I’m hooked on SpongeBob of the popular Nickelodeon
cartoon “SpongeBob SquarePants.”
And it’s not just me -- at least according to the Wall Street Journal --
which reported recently that gays across the country are hooked on
“SpongeBob’s” optimism, his weird psychedelic world and strange sense of
humor.
Talk show host Conan O’Brien recently asked Tom Kenny — the voice of
SpongeBob — if his pal Squidward is gay. Kenny wouldn’t say, but he did joke
that “all the main characters are hiding horrible secrets.”
There’s also speculation that SpongeBob and his friend Patrick are lovers.
They’re often seen holding hands.
I first starting watching Sponge Bob at the urging of my 8 year old nephew
-- it is goofy and an acquired taste.
Upon hearing news of the Sponge Bob gay rumors, I immediately called my
newphew’s mother. For what it is worth, she agreed with others who speculate
that Squidward was probably gay, but she didn’t think Sponge Bob and Patrick
were lovers.
I’ve included a picture of Sponge Bob here for those still searching for
Halloween costume inspiration. If you want to see what Squidward looks like
