DIGITAL DELIVERS ON THE OPEN ADVANTAGE PROMISE

OF OSF/1 AND DCE

DEC OSF/1 Operating System First on The Market . . .

SAN FRANCISCO -- January 22, 1992 -- Today Digital Equipment
Corporation escalated its continuing barrage of Open Advantage
introductions by announcing it is the first vendor in the
industry to offer a production version of the OSF/1 operating
system as a deliverable product. The company also introduced a
starter kit for the OSF DCE (Open Software Foundation
Distributed Computing Environment). This comes on the heels of
Digital's December announcement of the industry's lowest-cost
RISC workstation.

The Digital implementation of the OSF/1 operating system
already is popular with software companies that want to enter
the market quickly. At the announcement, over 90 leading
software companies said their applications will run on the DEC
OSF/1 operating system. Their products can be ported easily to
other computers supporting the OSF/1 operating system such as
those from IBM and Hewlett-Packard as they become available.

"Digital is providing software developers with the advantage
of faster time to market for their OSF/1-based UNIX products,"
said Domenic LaCava, Vice President of Digital's UNIX-based
Software and Systems group. "Developers like the fact that it
will be easy for them to port to other OSF/1 implementations
when they are available. Because Digital is delivering now, we
expect that many more developers will port to Digital's
platforms first. There will be a huge application base for the
DEC OSF/1 operating system."

Digital is providing the technologies employed in DEC OSF/1
to The Santa Cruz Operation. Inc (SCO) to be included in its ACE
UNIX product. OSF/1 is a major software component of the
Advanced Computing Environment (ACE) initiative. Both Digital
and SCO are founding members of the ACE initiative, which has
over 200 members and represents the very large hardware base
that has attracted many application developers.

DEC OSF/1 forms the basis of the ACE/UNIX operating system
from SCO. "We are pleased that Digital is shipping its OSF/1
product," said Scott McGregor, Vice President of Santa Cruz.
"This confirms the growing momentum of the OSF/1 market for
ACE/UNIX systems based on this important technology. We are

continuing to work with Digital in developing ACE/UNIX
products."

Digital also announced, as part of its open services
approach, a conversion program for users of the firm's existing
ULTRIX operating system. ULTRIX service contracts can be
converted to DEC OSF/1 service contracts at no additional cost,
and ULTRIX software licenses can be converted to DEC OSF/1
licenses for a nominal fee to cover administrative costs.

The DEC OSF/1 operating system controls the execution of
computer programs and performs system functions. It is based on
source code technology provided by the Open Software Foundation
and it meets the most stringent requirements of the OSF/1
trademark and certification program.

Digital has engineered into its OSF/1 implementation several
added-value, open technologies that enhance the OSF source code
and maintain conformance to the OSF Application Environment
Specification. These include:

o Realtime support. For the realtime application market
Digital has added features that ensure predictable,
fast responses to external events and that comply to
the latest draft of the POSIX 1003.4 realtime
standard.

o A high degree of binary, source, and data
compatibility with the ULTRIX operating system for
applications which are written according to existing
programming language standards. Both the DEC OSF/1 and
ULTRIX operating systems share networking protocols
for interoperability.

o Support for compact disc read-only memory (CDROM)
storage media, based on the ISO 9660 standard.

o Support for networks that implement the ANSI Fiber
Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) standard.

o Capability to process larger amounts of data due to an
increased number of files that can be open at one
time.

For customers purchasing new systems with the DEC OSF/1
operating system, a 2-user license costs $199. Additional user
licenses start at $530 for two additional users on a DECstation
workstation. A special trade-in program for current ULTRIX
customers converting to DEC OSF/1 software is available for
$199, which covers all users under the current license. The DEC
OSF/1 software may be ordered now for delivery beginning in
March.

Digital announced pricing and availability for core
technologies of the OSF Distributed Computing Environment (DCE),
a standard mechanism that facilitates communication between
applications running on multi-vendor networks. "In keeping with
Digital's commitment to offer the most open set of technologies
in the industry, the Digital DCE Starter Kit enables
applications developers to take immediate advantage of the power
of distributed computing," said LaCava.

The Digital DCE Starter Kit provides several components of
the DCE architecture required to design and build multi-vendor
applications. They include Remote Procedure Call tools,
directory services, and a time service. The DCE "threads"
feature works with the DEC OSF/1 and ULTRIX operating systems to
accelerate access to resources on the network. The three
separately licensed packages, all available in May, include the
Runtime Services for $200, the Application Developer's Kit for
$500, and the Cell Directory Service Server for $2,000.

DEC OSF/1 is a key operating system environment supported by
Network Application Support (NAS), Digital's set of software
products based on industry standards that provide for
application integration across systems from multiple vendors. By
using NAS software products such as DCE, Motif, and the CDA
architecture for compound documents, OSF/1-based applications
can interoperate with applications on other platforms such as
MS-DOS, VMS, and SunOS. The NAS 200 and NAS 300 Integrated
Products which include NAS components are planned for delivery
for DEC OSF/1 in the fall, 1992.

At the same time Digital announced a selection of key

shared libraries, memory mapped files, realtime support, and logical
volume management. Part of the charter of the Open Software Foundation is to
provide an interface for developing portable applications that will run on
a variety of hardware platforms. The DEC OSF/1 product is compliant with the
OSF/1
Application Environment Specification (AES) that specifies the interface to
support these portable applications.

In addition to conforming to OSF specifications, DEC OSF/1 technology
has been accepted
by partners of the Advanced Computing Environment (ACE) initiative
as the OSF/1 implementation of the ACE initiative's UNIX specification.

A key part of Digital's UNIX strategy has been the development and
support of industry standards. DEC OSF/1 supports the following key
operating system and windowing system standards:

Partner Services from the Corporate Independent Software Vendor Group

Overview:

Digital's corporate Independent Software Vendor Group (ISVG) was
formed in 1988 to launch the DECwindows development campaign for the
industry, and began supporting the UNIX-based Software and Systems
Group (USS) in May 1990. Its mission is to provide a broadbase
portfolio of quality applications for Digital's strategic operating
environments -- ULTRIX, VMS, ACE, and now DEC OSF/1 -- to customers
worldwide.

The ISVG accomplishes this with a comprehensive three-pronged strategy
of recruitment, technical support services, and merchandising and
partner services. Once a developer is part of Digital's program,
which is accomplished simply by placing a call to 1-800-DEC-ISVN and
completing the materials received, members have access to all the
program's support and promotion services.

Key Features/Benefits:

o The ISVG partner services are available worldwide, for all of
Digital's strategic operating environments.

o The technical support services are available in many forms,
including online, hardcopy, at developers' sites, at Digital's porting
centers and through Digital courses. They include documentation,
development tools and resources, technology exchanges and training.

o The merchandising and promotion services are delivered through market
awareness programs, distribution channel linkages, and both demand and
lead generation efforts.

Technical Support

o Digital's Partner Network, formerly known as ISVNet,
provides online access to conferences discussing technical
issues, with solutions provided by other ISVs
and Digital support staff. Technology exchanges also
occur via the Partner Network; there are over 22 technical
notes conferences.

o More than over 40 porting centers exist worldwide, including 12
satellite sites at distributor facilities and universities
throughout the U.S.

o Development Systems are available at discounted rates for
developers who prefer to port an application at their own
site rather than at a porting center.

o Training Centers are located in Marlboro, Mass.;
Mountain View, Calif.; Reading, England; Evry, France; and
Tokyo. ISVs are taught the development details necessary to
support a variety of environments, including DECwindows,
Compound Document Architecture, Network Application Support
(NAS), OSF/1 and Motif.

Merchandising and Partner Services -- Lead Generation

o Digital's ISVs are merchandised regularly in
Digital-published catalogs distributed to over 250,000
customers. Publications include a special RISC/UNIX
workstation and server edition of the DECdirect catalog, and
the USS Software Source Book. In addition, developers also
can be listed in Softbase, Digital's online database listing
available applications. Softbase can be accessed through the
Partner Network.

o Over 30,000 of the first two editions of the "Software
Store for ULTRIX" CDROM with application demos shipped free
of charge to Digital workstation customers.

o ISVs participate regularly in Digital events, including
Open Systems Open House, a program that travels to over 100
major cities worldwide, and the International Business
Development Forum (IBDF) which provides opportunities for
developers and distributors to build new international
business relationships. One hundred fifty developers and 100
distributors representing 50 countries attended the most
recent IBDF.

o Digital's Partner Network, in addition to providing technical
support also includes information exchange notes
conferences for both developers and distributors. This
industry-wide awareness enhances an ISV's competitive edge.

o Direct Mail campaigns target specific market segments and
jointly promote ISV applications and Digital platforms.

o Press relations and consultant relations programs are also
available to support ISVs' efforts to increase industry
awareness of their applications.

For more information on any of the programs, call 1-800-DEC-ISVN.

Product Name: DEC C++ for ULTRIX Version 1.0

Overview:

DEC C++ represents a set of products which address
the total software development needs of the C++ programmer. DEC C++ for
ULTRIX includes a native, optimizing C++ compiler, a C++ source-level
debugger, and class libraries.

The DEC C++ compiler is a true compiler -- no layering or intermediate
steps. This provides superior functionality, especially in debugging,
tool integration, and performance.

The DEC C++ compiler supports the full language definition as specified
in "The Annotated C++ Reference Manual" (Addison-Wesley, reprinted May
1991, with corrections), excluding exception handling, which is
considered an experimental technology and will be added to a future
version of DEC C++. This document is the basis for the proposed ANSI
standard and is compatible with the de facto industry standard from
AT&T, Cfront Versions 2.1 and 3.0 Version 3.0 compatibility includes
support for templates, a feature which facilitates the reusability of code.

The DEC C++ debugger, DECladebug, was written in C++ and has been
designed to fully support the C++ language. It is a source-level
debugger that supports multiple inheritance, virtual base classes,
virtual functions, and function name and operator overloading. The
command line interface resembles dbx, which is familiar to many UNIX
users; when used with DEC FUSE Support for DEC C++, a Motif-based
graphical user interface is provided.

The DEC FUSE Support for DEC C++ option to DEC FUSE ties the two products
together and allows the C++ programmer to make full use of Digital's
leadership multilanguage programming environment. Included are class
browsers, a Motif graphical user interface to DECladebug, and an
incremental linker which greatly accelerates edit-to-execution time.

DEC C++ is currently available for Digital's RISC/ULTRIX systems; future
releases will support all strategic Digital platforms, including OSF/1
and VMS.

Key Feature/Benefits:

o Full, native C++ compiler: Greater performance and development
efficiency and better integration with software development tools;
support for the latest release from AT&T (Cfront V3.0 and V2.1).

o Superior debugger written in C++ but with a "dbx-like" debugger command
line interface: Designed to fully support the C++ language definition,
but with no need to learn a new command syntax.

o DEC FUSE support: Allows DEC C++ programmers to fully exploit the
software development features of DEC FUSE.

o Adherence to standards: Provides a single language definition across all
platforms that complies with de facto standards, with a full commitment
to support the ANSI standard once it is finalized.

o Porting to OSF/1: Any application written in DEC C++ for ULTRIX will
easily migrate to a future OSF/1 release.

Hardware/Software Requirements:

o Hardware:

All systems supported by ULTRIX for RISC

o Software:

ULTRIX Versions 4.2 and 4.2a.

I assume that we can ewxpect an impact message to help us consider the issues
involved in OSF/1 conversion for the CSLG/ESL customer where youare cetain
about such things as the avilability of MULTIuser upgrades as CSLG license and
the like?

Some CSLG-related questions regarding OSF/1:

1. How will OSF/1 be integrated into the CSLG product list?
Will it be free? Will there be royalties? When will it happen?
Do I need PAKs?

2. Will capacity upgrades be possible under the CSLG? Will the
old upgrade kits still work? What will we owe to who in order
to upgrade the capacity? (Currently, we put systems on our
AT&T license.)

3. How will AT&T fit into all this? Does AT&T have any pieces
in OSF/1? Will all systems have to be our AT&T contract?
Which one - Release 2 or Release 4?

4. Will the software kits be distributed on the Ultrix CDROM's?
Beginning when?
