This course is the first of five being developed which together
will constitute a post-graduate certificate in technology-based
teaching, subject to formal academic approval. The development of
these courses is a collaborative effort between the University of
British Columbia (UBC) in Canada and the Monterrey Institute of
Technology (ITESM) in Mexico.
The proliferation of relatively cheap and easy to use computer software
and networks, such as the World Wide Web, have made it relatively
easy for virtually anyone to produce courseware. However research
indicates that there are significant relationships between the use
of different technologies and different approaches to teaching and
learning. Furthermore, technology-based teaching is being used
more and more for =91distributed=92 learning, which means the use of
technology for flexible access to learning for both on-campus and
off-campus students, rather than just an additional resource
within classroom or distance teaching.
This course introduces students to three different design models for
distributed learning, and challenges them to examine the implicit
and explicit assumptions behind the use of new technologies within
each of these models. Participants will be asked to develop their
own design for a distributed learning course, and to provide a
rationale and critique of their own and other students=92 designs.
Participants will also be expected to use the internet to access
information and to participate in on-line discussions with other
students, including graduate students and faculty members at
ITESM who are also taking this course.
