Hi,

Does anyone have a recommendation for open source ePortfolio software
that can either be linked to an LMS or added onto an LMS?

Thanks,
-Alix

Alix:
It's interesting you asked that at this moment, 'cause I just last
week installed a copy of Mahara (http://mahara.org/), an open-source
e-portfolio and social networking platform. The folks involved with it have
been working closely with the Moodle camp, and have an excellent
block-integration, single-sign-on deployment option which makes it integrate
very well with Moodle. So much it's earned its own name - Mahoodle. Of course,
I say this in the abstract...I have the thing running on a beta server of mine,
but have yet to implement the SSO capabilities yet (SSL is required, and my
beta box doesn't have that up yet). But with SSL in place, there are very
simple and explicit instructions on how to accomplish it.
I really like Mahara's feature set, and fully intend to deploy it on our
production box as soon as we have some details worked out. Since were a Moodle
house, I haven't explored whether it works with any other LMS.
Hope this helps.

Alix, depending upon what features you want and what LMS you have, you may find Exabis a good option. Here at Bridgewater College, we have been exploring e-portfolios for the past few months. We are running Moodle and wanted a module that would allow students to construct a portfolio over their four years here that could have sample papers/projects from Moodle and other venues and for them to write reflective essays to accompany their portfolio. We needed these portfolios to only be shared between students and professors But Exabis does allow sharing to be with anyone on the Moodle system. When I looked at Mahara a few months ago, its emphasis on social networking was a direction we did not want to go.

We are meeting next week with the faculty portfolio committee to demo Exabis and to see if it meets the needs they perceive such software should cover.
