barcode scanner/attendance tracker

One of the departments I support is looking for an attendance tracker of
sorts.
They want a barcode scanner that will let the student sign in and out
effortlessly.
But, one day the student might be signing in for tutoring and the next day
they might be signing in for lab. There actually probably are about two
dozen different areas that we are needing to track.
What might you suggest? Cost effective is a factor.
