I have just purchased a Sony DCR-SR85 Handy Cam with 60 GB hard disk for
the technology lab . I can download the videos with no problem to play in
Window Media Player. However, I cannot get them to work with Windows Movie
Maker.
This is the message I get:
C:\Documents and Settings\My Documents\My Videos\M2U00011.avi could not be
imported. The required codec was not downloaded automatically because the
Download codecs automatically check box is not selected in the Options
dialog box. Even when we check the box for the codecs, it still gives us
this message.
We have tried to convert them to various formats and all that comes
through is the audio. Can anyone help? Any suggestions for a video
editing software that might work if Windows Movie Maker is impossible?
Thanks for your help!

Windows Movie Maker doesn't support the .avi format. You'll need to
convert it to .wmv before editing in Movie Maker. There are several
conversion tools available for this. My preferred is "Super" and it's
freeware. Google "Super converter" and you will find it at the top of
the list.

My version of movie maker purports to open .avi files, although I
believe there are still some codec issues. I normally encounter this
problem with the mpeg-2 files that some camcorders export and it drives
me nuts. Without really understanding any aspect of this process in any
significant degree, I have charged my computer with just about every
freely available codec on the web over the years, and now I seem to be
more or less bullet proof, but there is a piece of software called gspot
...I know... Goto http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ . This will tell you
which codecs the .avi file requires.
Alternatively you could just try and convert to another formatt as
another, less pedantic than me, contributor suggested.

Hi,
I would suggest a download of "essential windows codex." It's sort of
the blanket approach to maybe fixing the problem without having to
specifically know which codec is missing.

You mentioned looking for another video editing program if needed. You
might want to look at AvidFree DV - the free lite version of the full
program. While Avid is no longer supporting this version, there are
websites that still have the program available for download, complete
with registration key.

David,
Perhaps this wasn't necessarily directed at me; but, as used, the shoe
fits nonetheless.
That said, I'm not sure why converting the media type could be confused
with a lack of pedantics? If you give me your phone number and address
book I am going to put them in my cell phone address book which also
syncs to my computer. So anytime I need your phone number or email
address I have it at my fingertips. I didn't take the time to learn
your information because I have developed a method of retaining it that
doesn't require me to memorize it. Yet, I can retrieve it all the
same.
When I first started using Windows Movie Maker some years ago it only
recognized .wmv files. I spent some time searching for codec solutions
and other editing platforms to work with the .mov files that my video
camera created. In the end I found a super nifty free conversion tool
(named Super) that converted my .mov files to .wmv and then let me put
them into Windows Movie Maker and edit.
Since I opted for converting the media instead of further finding a way
to force Move Maker to handle .mov files does that make my approach any
less ostentatious?
The point is I would rather spend my extra time learning how to make
the most out of what I wanted to do with the media. By finding this
conversion utility I was then able to convert (very rapidly i might add)
the videos to flash and incorporate them into web design projects.
