INTERNET: DISCUSSION: GROUPS:
Beware of Grouply

Beware of Grouply Live Journal IRC
<http://lrc.livejournal.com/890654.html>

Quoting this post:

"There's a "service" called Grouply, that has members sign up - and *give them
their yahoo ID and password", and then goes to YahooGroups and changes all of
their group memberships to go to Grouply.

Bad enough - right? It *also* keeps all the messages from that group in its
archives, even if the message has been deleted from Yahoo's archives. It claims
it does not start "harvesting" messages posted before the first grouply member
from that list joins - but in its description it talks about old archives. It
also, at this time, can apparently allow pending members to view group messages
- and other lovely things.

I know nobody here is likely to use this "service", and as far as I can tell
they are only targeting Yahoo - but if you're on a group that is supposedlly
private, and anyone on the list is using grouply - the messages are no longer
truly private."

-------------------------------------------

Indeed a new Grouply forum has been created that Grouply intends to monitor so
as to learn more about discussion group anger and strong disagreement with
Grouply methods, but as the post above states, much can be learned from all
sides of this issue from a tremendous volume of posts on this topic already
sent to the EmailList-Managers discussion group on Yahoo Groups.

EmailList-Managers

Quoting briefly one poster on the EmailList Managers list in this regard:

"No kidding! Not to mention a backlog of emails, eh? When I went to
bed last night around midnight, my mailbox was clean for EL-M and
this morning at 6:30, there were almost 100 waiting for me to read."

It should be noted that opinions are developing that the activities of Grouply
in regard to Yahoo Groups includes some activities that are very likely to be
illegal in areas like privacy and copyright and more, so for the present time
it is recommended that this service be avoided. Some Yahoo Groups list owners
are actually deleting members who it is determined have a membership with
Grouply.

This is a particularly important area of concern for legal, medical, library
and other fields where discussion group archives may require privacy for
ethical and legal reasons such as the HIPAA Law. Apparently, Grouply can
obtain the archives of a group, once a Yahoo group member has joined Grouply.
This may also be a grotesque example of the potential intrusive nature of
social networking groups as they change further the privacy expectations of the
public and replace them with a starving appetite for private information,
illustrated by a new program on Fox that involves the use of lie detectors.
