I, working in a High School, have a set of free applications that I try to install on every workstation. Some are open source. Some are not. All of these are to aid in every classroom activity and all students creativity.
Of course, I have some standards like: Adobe Reader Adobe Flash Player Adobe Shockwave Player Adobe Authorware Player Java Runtime Environment Windows XP Service Pack 3
Others, in no particular order, that might be considered are: Audacity CamStudio Chemlab Cygwin Delicious plug-in Divx Player Free Pascal Geogebra Graph Paper Printer (used to create graph paper and charts (even music bar charts)) Java Development Kit Paper Port Viewer Python PyGame Sebrans ABC Games for Kids Photosotry Sudoku Toon Owl and Mouse (all of the map and letter programs) WDC-162 (Used to draw Chemical compounds) Windows Media Player 11 Google Sketchup Celestia Maxima Scilab Stellarium PLT-Scheme Cartoonist (Image warping software) Gimp (only in the main public lab) Openoffice (only in the main public lab) Pivot Stick Figure Animator Tux Paint VLC Windows Open Star Logo Kid Basic Geo Quiz Electro Ideal Gas in 3D So You Know Your Capitals The Constitution Notebook Munch A word
I'll admit that I don't have every program everywhere. I'll also admit that my list is a bit math and science heavy. I like to have the software available even before the teacher asks for it. I know that some of these apps won't ever be used. But, they are available to any student/teacher that wants to use them and learn with them.
Now, I know there are other apps out there that my school can use. Ones that I haven't found yet. So, I'm interested in seeing what others are using too. I'd like to have a perfect set of apps to be installed across my domain in which all students can get the best education that I can provide.

Format Factory is a great app for converting all kinds of files. http://www.formatoz.com/index.html Audacity Delicious toolbar (and any other toolbar needed for easy access like Diigo, Box and Save, etc.)
