I was hoping someone could address a question that was asked by one of my
colleagues.

"I went to a yearbook workshop yesterday (one of my 8th grade
exploratories) and was introduced to iPhoto as a photo gallery management
tool. It was very easy to use and I do anticipate having 15,000 or more
photos next year for yearbook.
I am planning to purchase copies of Adobe Creative Suite 3 Standard for
yearbook and broadcasting. I don't have enough $ to purchase copies for all
of the computers (grant writing looks ahead). By chance, do you know if
Photoshop has a photo gallery management system similar to iPhoto? I went
to the Adobe website and couldn't find out. Do you recommend a software
that does this? I would like to store all of the photos on one computer
(with back up) and then allow the files to be "shared" when the students are
working on a particular layout. I watched a demo of iPhoto and was
impressed. I can only guess that there must be something out there in PC
land that is similar and I am hoping it is Photoshop!"

Thanks so much,

Even Photoshop Elements has a photo organizer that would likely help with
tagging! We also use flickr with a private group so we can upload and share
possible picture for yearbook. It works well for our students - you just
have to teach them to only download the "large" image for yearbook use.
There are places to post comments & discussion so kids could note who used
which images. Good luck!

As with many of the applications in the Apple portfolio, they started
off with open source and iPhoto is no exception. They started with
F-Spot - http://f-spot.org/Main_Page It's only available for Gnome,
but you could get a machine or two, load a Linux distro that includes
Gnome, use GIMP for photo editing, and if you need really wild
typesetting capabilities, use OpenOffice Latex extensions. That way you
could probably buy a nice PC with all the software for every two copies
of Creative Studio 3 you were going to buy!
